Temporary loss of Speedo and Tach
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:04:50 PM »

On occasion I will lose power to the speedo including odometer, engine light and alarm (battery light good) as well as the tach.  If I stop the engine and restart, everything is normal until it happens again (rarely but is seeming to become more frequent).  On one occasion I couldn't restart the bike because the ignition fuse was blown, however, that has not happened again.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Did you check for fault codes?

I had a very similar issue on my 04 flhtcse.  Started out just a once in a while thing,  got worse over time until it regularly blew fuses.

My issue turned out to be a VERY small, almost invisible wear spot, shorting out a wire in the main harness, under the fairing, where it crosses over the radio/fairing support brackets (throttle side).   Very diffcult to detect the wear spot as its on the back side of the stiff harness, not really very visable to the eye even when you do find it.   Mine did not require any repair other than insulation from grounding on the support bracket. I think i used thick clear packing tape on the bracket edge, and a wrap or two of black electrical tape on the harness.

Worth a shot anyway ..

My '07 SEUC did that a few times. Would always reset after I stopped and turned it off. No fault codes. Never figured out what was causing it but I suspected a loose connection or a ground fault. Never could get it to do that for the service tech but his suspicion was that it was in the wiring from the voltage regulator.  :nixweiss:

It is common with the Thundermax. Clean the terminals with some electronic cleaner and make sure the terminals are straight and coat with dielectric grease before reassembly
