Epic Ride Done!
« on: July 24, 2013, 04:38:07 PM »

12 days, Virginia to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, S Dakota and Back. 6212 miles in all kinds of weather, tornados, hail, 105 degrees, 35 degree and of course some really great weather. Did it old school, left the CVO parked in the garage and took the 09 FLHP with 16" apes, no cruise, no stereo. Jury rigged an auto GPS though which was a lifesaver in all the backroads I rode on. Went up Pike's Peak, rode the rockies through Vail, Breckenridge etc. Hit Yellowstone in Wyoming and rode Chief Joseph and Beartooth. Rode up to NW Montana to Whitefish and rode Going to The Sun road in Glacier. Finished the trip in the Black Hills in SD and went to the Badlands and ofcourse rode Spearfish Canyon. Too many other places to mention and met so many great people all over!
I will post a few pictures in this thread.
This one is on the way up to Pikes Peak.

Sounds amazing!  How long did you plan / prep before venturing out, how many riders in your group, and why did you decide to go old school (leave the CVO in the garage)?

I used the Harley trip planner to set up the ride initially (you can search epic ride on their website, its public). I based the stops on Pikes Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. Made no reservations till the day before and used cheap lodging wherever I could. Packed light and picked up stuff I needed as I went along.
I knew the bike could take a beating, had some really bad roads in Wyoming and Montana so I took the RK and I love riding it as much as my cvo anyway. The mustang airseat was great by the way for as much time as I spent riding. Went solo as the two guys I ride with who can ride like me couldn't get time off. It was first time going solo and it was great. Made friends in a lot of places, went as fast as I wanted or as slow, stopped when I wanted.

Here is a picture of beartooth pass very near the peak (about 11k elevation).

If you wouldn't mind sharing, where were the bad roads in WY and MT? Heading out west to Idaho Hwy 12 on Tuesday through ND and MT then back through north Yellowstone on Bear Tooth Highway up to Red Lodge, then back down on Chief Joseph Hwy to Sheridan then through to Sturgis and the Rally.

Anything we should avoid?

Stay off Greybull Hwy. About 20 miles of construction and gravel.

Great report. Those pics brought back lots of memories. I am sure it gave you many, many as well. Wife and I did Jellystone, Beartooth and Chief Joseph last year. We try and do a 3-4000 mile trip once a year but this year due to son needing surgery, had to shorten it to a four day juant. Nexy tear we already have an eight-dayer calendared.
