Mile after mile of sweeping curves along the river or through the forrest unfolded before us. There was very little traffic coming at us and just enough traffic in front to allow us to pass safely and quickly.

By the time we got to Lewiston, we realized that there would not be time to ride down the Snake River into Oregon. We stripped off rain gear, leathers, and sweatshirts, ate a few snacks, and left Hell's Canyon HD in t-shirts and mesh jackets. There was a national Victory motorcycle rally in Lewiston that weekend so we saw lots of Visions and Cross Country's riding around town and up and down the canyon road. We also ran into a couple that had shipped their bikes over from New Zealand and were spending 2 months riding around the US. They were off to Sturgis, Florida, and back to the 110th in Milwaukee. After chatting for a while, we crossed the Snake River into Washington so we could color in another state, turned around and headed right back up Highway 12. Coming across the bridge into Idaho we saw this interesting sculpture.

The trip back up the mountain was even more enjoyable than the trip down. I can see how my buddy can ride this road for a whole week! It was in the mid 90's when we left Lewiston but as we got 20 miles out of town and closer to the river, it cooled down. We took turns leading all the way back to Lochsa Lodge where we gassed up, put on leathers as it was now back down to the low 60's as a rain shower had passed through an hour before, and yammered on about what a great ride we had been on. The 56 miles back into Missoula flew by and we could see the rain out in front of us but we never got wet, just some damp and drying roads.

Checked into the Marriott Courtuyard, unloaded our gear, cleaned up, and crossed the parking lot to the Montana club for a little surf and turf!

All in all, the best riding day of my life even with 90 miles of rain.

that Road to Lochsa is a great ride.  we try to do it once or twice a year... But then again, it's easy striking distance from Spokane, WA.  A good day ride from home to Mountain home.

My wife and I went up there in 2011 with about 16 of the local HOG family members... We just happened to have an ordained minister with us... that was when Ishka and I said I do.  Lochsa Lodge has some special meaning to us...  Surprised all present including us... as we did not LEAVE Friday morning thinking about saying I DO.  I was quite the weekend.  Did the public vows on the mountain... and when we got home, we got the paperwork down and but Jimmy Carlson (the minister guy) and our two witnesses a pitcher for their deeds.   What memories....

Really pleases my heart to see others enjoy that part of the country as much as we do.   It's Awesome.

Thanks for the stories....

Day 4 found us leaving Missoula in very light rain and backtracking a couple hundred miles to Livingston, MT where we turned south towards Yellowstone. The weather remained cool and cloudy with clouds hanging very low on the hillsides as we rode by. A beautiful scene to witness with the rain halting after only a few miles.

The sun came out and temps went back up to the low 80's as we rode through the northwest entrance of Yellowstone.

Pulled into Mammoth Hot Springs just inside the park and headed east on the North Loop Road through northern Yellowstone park. Hadn't been to this end of the park before so it was all new to me. Fantastic national resource!

Obligatory shot of buffalo in the park. Lots of bikers working their way towards Sturgis just like we were.

Stopped in Silvergate MT for a snack and some time off the bikes and then went on to Cooke City where we fueled up for our run up Beartooth Pass.

The climb began in forrest and curves and ended well above the tree line in temps in the low 60's and windy conditions. Photo of the Beast near the top of the pass.

Beartooth highway takes you back and forth from Wyoming to Montana a few times. This was near the summit.

Just over the border on the Montana side is a rest stop still near the top.

From the rest stop to Red Lodge, MT it's hairpins and mountainsides. Incredible ride!

Very cool story, thanks for sharing! Having grown up in South Dakota, I feel the same way seeing folks enjoy the Black Hills riding experience!
