Does anyone using Syn 3 find they burn oil? Discussing this with a friend and we had the same thing. Used 1 qt. between oil changes. You can't see any smoke.

From day one, used Syn 3. At 15,000 never had to add oil between changes.

Unless you use some off brand crap, the brand of oil isn't likely to make a significant difference in consumption (assuming you use the correct viscosity).  Don't talk yourself into believing SYN3 is somehow causing your engine to consume more oil than it would if you used brand X.

A quart used between changes isn't a problem...

Yes that is about what my bike does and there is no smoke or apparent leakage.

in 5 bikes over the past 11 years and over 175,000 combined miles and syn 3 in all of them i have not burned any oil. Even my 04 Ultra with 80,000 miles on it when I traded it did not burn oil.

Don't burn oil, rather throw it out the air cleaner all over my right saddle bag if running hard.  Not the Syn 3's fault.

LOL, Spyder!  Had pretty much the same deal happen on the SEUC.  But, once it puked out the excess during the first hard ride after the last oil change, all has been well.  :2vrolijk_21:

Just a thought,  why can't we have a new subject category in the CVO Technical section.  It could be called "Fuel, oils and liquids" and be put between "Cleaning/Detailing" and
"Electronic Toys and Gadgets".  This would be a fitting place for all the "oil" threads and any questions about fuels and other related liquids.  It seems to be a popular enough topic to justify it's own spot.  JMHO   :nixweiss:

I'm closely watching my bike's oil consumption.
After having the 1,000 mile service on my 2013 CVO S/E Ultra, I installed a dipstick which has the oil level/oil temperature.
I checked it regularly and I was waiting to take the bike in for the 5,000 mile service but never noticed the oil level reading low.
I wanted to take a trip but I couldn't get my bike in for service so I decide to just do the service myself.
On the Sunday before I was going to do the work I did a short run to a local watering hole and as I shifting gears at 2200 RPM I heard a lifter clap a few times.
The next day I went to the dealer and got the fluids, filter, O-rings, etc. for an oil change.
On Tuesday morning, before I did anything, I pressed the button on the dipstick and it only displayed "Two Bars", or in other words, TWO Quarts LOW!
Sure enough, I drained the engine oil and drained the filter and poured it into a gallon jug and it was only a little over half full!!!
That was, give or take almost two quarts of oil in about 3800 miles.
As I was billed for 6 quarts of SYN 3, I'm thinking that when the dealer did the 1,000 mile service, the tech didn't put 4 quarts of oil in the engine, instead splitting the 6th quart between the engine and the chain case.
Even if that is so, it would still mean the bike used  1-1/2 quarts (or so) in less than 4,000 miles.
I'll be checking my oil level frequently.
I
When I filled (4 qts) the engine, the oil level on the dipstick was a little over the "FULL" mark of the dipstick with the engine cold.
The last time I checked the oil level dipstick display by pushing the button it read "Four Bars" and when I pulled the dipstick, the oil was right on the "FULL" mark and that's after 500 miles or so.

FWIW, I used Syn 3 in the engine and in the primary chain case, but I used Red Line Shockproof in the transmission.

You really don't want the oil level to be over the FULL mark, and definitely not with the engine cold.  Even on the late models this will lead to carryover into the air cleaner.

The engine oil capacity is 4.0 quarts including the filter, but you can't assume you can just dump in four quarts.  You never actually get all the old oil out, and the best way to fill during an oil change is to add only 3 quarts, run the engine at idle for a minute to fill the filter and distribute the oil, then use the dipstick to determine how much more oil to add.  It's better to be a little below the FULL mark, never above.

I agree with not filling to the "full" mark on the dipstick.

Has been my experience that anything above 1/2 quart from full is a waste and will likely come out the air-cleaner.
