I wouldn't take it that far....but knowing that the factory set the idle where it is for specific reasons is not rocket science!

Yeah, the factory setting imply perfection. That has to be the most laughable post.  :bananarock:

Mine was overheating bad because of the factory settings. I researched it and found that a tune was recommended because the factory one sucks. My 97 Heritage loped like that at low idle and I loved the sound, I had 34000 miles on it and it ran fine. This thread is the first I have heard that the low idle is bad to that degree so I am glad I learned. The bike in the video sounds cool and I can see why someone would want to emulate that not knowing it was destructive. Oh well. But I do find it entertaining when people attempt to be condescending but ignorant at the same time. Thanks for the laughs!

Your '97 Heritage if I'm not mistaken was an Evo motor the motor the OP is speaking of is a Twin Cam... big difference. I had a '96 Fatboy which idled low to achieve that "potato potato" sound that many of us love and enjoy from our H-D's. Low idle on an Evo and low idle on a Twin Cam can result in all together different set of outcomes. :nervous: :(

I didn't conclude what yr bike the orig poster had.   The bike in the video pretty much has to be a "carbed" bike..............NOT EFI.   You are not and cannot get an EFI bike to sound quite like a carbed Harley can when it lopes at low rpms.   You can get close..........but no cigar.

The black box and electronics of the EFI bikes require a minimum 950 rpms to maintain the charge and juice necessary to keep it all going.

Want that "sound"..................get a carbed bike with the right set of cams and go for it. :drink:

The bike in the video (I believe) is a CVO Breakout... a EFI bike...and you are correct (IMO) it would need a higher RPM to "maintain charge and juice necessary to keep it all going". :2vrolijk_21:

Laughable...I think not!!!  My post was referring to idle speed only......We all know the factory sets the bikes very lean out the door...but as for the idle--you need a certain amount of RPM to maintain all of the electronics as well as charge the battery.

Ignorance comes in all sizes and flavors ematicic.  While we can perhaps debate the method with which the message was relayed to Nicky Pass by some responders, the truth remains the same.  Modern Twin Cams shouldn't be set to idle at 700 rpm, and doing so just to "sound cool" makes just as much sense as lowering a bike until all the hard parts drag the ground just to "look cool".  People who want to just look cool or sound cool should probably stick to show bikes for those characteristics, and not mess up their street bikes.

Btw, that EVO you had in '97 basically ran zero psi oil pressure at idle.  The Twin Cam has several plain bearings that the EVO didn't have, and plain bearings do not tolerate zero or nearly zero oil pressure very well.  I don't think prematurely wearing out parts of the engine just to "sound cool" is terribly intelligent.  It's not just a matter of keeping the electrical system charging, though that is also kind of important as well.

Anyhow, question asked, question answered, time to move on the next question.

I can freely admit that I don't know much of the stuff posted here on the forum. I come here to learn. I might do something because it looks fun or sounds cool without know the ramifications. I think it was credible on part of the OP that he asked how, looking for some guidance from the people that know better. Just because it is common knowledge to many of you, some of us don't know it. I work on helicopters, avionics, so I have much to learn about my bike. The point of bringing up my 97 wasn't to say that it is comparable to bikes today, just that I had the throttle low on it. I had it low because it sounded good and no one ever educated me on the repercussions of such settings.

I agree, this is a hilarious post. OP asks a serious question, everyone jumps on board as if we all know everything, then the same people get butt hurt that I hurt their feelings by agreeing with NickyPass. If I change something up and it a bad idea, mechanically, I hope someone tells me. Most of us don't intentionally sabotage our rides and this forum is great so we can ask about things we find interesting. Some people can get over themselves and just answer questions and point out the facts.

I also had straight pipes on my 97 and my friend told me why that is mechanically bad, he wasn't an a55hole about it. He did tell me he would lynch me if I did that to the CVO because now I know better.
