The "Hydro-Glides" have landed.
« on: August 20, 2013, 07:27:51 AM »

In case you folks did not know at this point, the 1.1 qt cooling system is on a couple of the 103" models, and on the 110" CVO Ultra Classic.
We all knew it was only a matter of time, but looks like the time is now.
Is it a bad thing? I do not think so.

You're a tech, please break it down for us. How's it work. What's involved. What's the downside ? What's the upside ? Would really appreciate hearing from someone who routinely takes apart Harley-Davidson motorcycles and puts them back together what's going on here

Thanks in advance

This type of cooling has been used in the past. There are tons of pictures of this all over the web from the show and the early pics where from 3 years ago.

A loop of coolant is run through the head around the ex port, lowers had radiators in them, water pump is down under oil filter. Its an upside in most every aspect, cooler head temps is always a good thing.  Tons of opinions on good or bad but EPA is a ever changing deal and standards will never go backwards

Even just a cooled exhaust valve and port ought to help eliminate this.

Cooler running with the benefits from that, but now water leaks may be an issue upon occasion.

Scott, what impact do you think the liquid-cooled heads will have on getting headwork done? Will most cams on the market today that are suitable for the 110, still be the best option with these new heads? By cooling the exhaust valve is the primary benefit the ability to push the timing out without causing knock for greater performance or is the primary benefit of just cooling the exhaust port a comfort feature for the rider and passenger? How are they getting the heat away from the rider's legs since the radiators are directly in front of the rider's legs. Is there an air blower in each lower fairing that pulls the air through the radiator and out to the sides or under the lower fairings?

From what I have seen at the Mesa test track shop is that there is little difference in the head design.
There should be no problem using current cams that are out there or getting head work done.
A few special KM tools are needed (they say) to work on this new head / cooling system.
Keep in mind that moco has been testing these very heads for over 3 years, so most, if not all, the bugs should be worked out.

While I'm sure some of the "bugs" have been worked out, I'm still not sure I would want to own the first year of a model so significantly redesigned. It seems that no matter how good the testing and planning has been, unforeseen issues develop in real world use by thousands of non-engineer riders that have a way of discovering new ways to "test" new designs that the engineers never considered. I'll look forward to exploring the 2nd model yr and beyond of what looks like some very promising upgrades to HD's Touring bike line-up.

More importantly, I'd like to see if they make the "jump" to a liquid-cooled 120R in the CVOs after the initial model year of the new design.
