2014's The Heat Lives On
« on: August 27, 2013, 08:50:32 PM »

Some reviews are already showing up on the net referencing the 2014 bikes. Motorcycle.com is one sight that has done a shake down on the touring bikes. They state on hot days the heat is still very noticeable on the legs and after a while also the saddle. So here we go again spending 2 grand on a new bike to cool it down from the get go. Along with this you know your new pipes will be loud enough for you to forget using the new Bluetooth phone features. Was really hoping the Mt. Rushmore improvements especially the liquid cool motors would have drastically reduced the heat issue. Well maybe 2015.

With 2 liters of motor between your legs, you bet there's going to be some heat.

Unfortunately just cooling the heads is not going to have much of an impact on rider comfort, as I've mentioned many times in the past.  Cooling the heads doesn't cool the exhaust, and that is what's frying peoples legs and private parts.  When (if) Harley decides to do some serious shielding of the pipes then perhaps riders won't need asbestos chaps.  But of course that would add cost and the result wouldn't meet their styling objectives, so I don't think you will be seeing it in 2015 either.

You're correct in saying it will still be necessary to spend a couple grand to change the exhaust and make the bike run like it should.  Eliminating the Harley tax was obviously never one of the objectives for the Rushmore project.

I like this quote from Motorcycle.com:

Harley-Davidson execs called Project Rushmore the “most significant new product launch in our 110-year history,” but swallowing that hyperbole as fact is to shotgun the Harley Kool-Aid.

One dealers that have the twin cooled bikes set up and on the floor are calling them THE HARLEY GOLDWING!!!! I don't think there are a lot of people very happy with the changes as of yet. But we all know how we LOVE change!!!

As long as Harley keeps the current styling ethic as their #1 priority, the heat issues (such as they are) will continue.

That said, I do believe that Harley's made a huge leap forward with the Rushmore Touring bikes.

Have to remember the bike reviewed by Motorcycle.com was with the stock exhaust.  I am betting with a Full Sac X-pipe and tune it would be cooler than a stock air cooled bike.  With that said I have owned several V-Rods/Muscle and even those bikes were hot fully water cooled.

Someone mentioned that the Calif emissions were lower on the new water cooled motors. I believe the whole reason for the new cooling systems is to meet more stringent emissions standards. As we know from past model years, the lean settings on these motors create heat. Restricted, read "catalytic converters" exhaust traps the heat.

Free flowing after-market pipes and tuners fix these issues. HD and us, the customers, pay the price. We don't want to spend more money to "fix" a new bike. But I doubt HD really wanted to spend R&D and production $$$ to water cool their motors. Our government at work...............

...but on the upside..."They all do that".  Wouldn't catch me buying anything new HD put out...for at least a couple years of 'testing'.

I also like what the MoCo has done thus far.......With a valid and serious contender for market share such as the new "Indian Motorcycle Company", the improvements and technology upgrades for American motorcycling looks promising.  :orange:

04SEGlide,Being hot, getting rained on etc. is part of motorcycling. I have accepted that fact and it helps me enjoy my bike. Especially living in southern California I can go from 100 degrees inland to 65 degrees at the coast in about 45 minutes or less. Don't even think about Death Valley from the beginning of May until the end of October. Also another wonderful place to be in July or August is St. George Utah. Last time I went thru there it was 115 degrees on new asphalt.  My bike ran fine, however the glue in my wife's right tennis shoe melted and we had to stop and get her a new pair. Took a 3 hour break, got to Las Vegas at dusk. It was still 107 degrees. Drank some more cold water  checked into our rooms ate dinner and stayed up until 2:00 AM. It was a great day. Just for the record since I installed the Fulsac stage one map, open air cleaner and 1.75 baffles non cat head pipe , no pinging under any circumstances. CAHDBIKER
