Lifter life
« on: September 03, 2013, 07:57:24 AM »

I have  FLHTCUSE3 with 37,000 miles on the engine. Thought that I was hearing more ticking sounds at 25,000 and had dealer pull and check lifters. All was within tolerance. Installed adjustable push rods and went on about my riding. Question: What kind of mileage are riders getting out of the 110 lifters prior to replacing?

I would think you are borrowed time!!!. But it seems that the early 110's had other problems and we didn't hear much about lifters till 09. I may be wrong but I may be having memory lapse!!!

Yes, my 2008 110 engine was on recall and had cylinders replaced due to possibility of oil seepage.  Never experienced any cylinder problems but did replace compensator at 20,000 and about to do it again.

Not sure there is any particular mileage.  My '07 cuse2 had it motor replaced at 22k but not for lifter problems.  The replacement motor lasted about 62k before it grenaded due to lifter / cam bearing failure.  But my '12 cuse7 had catastrophic lifter failure at only 22k.  Go figure.   :nixweiss:

I think that I am going to go ahead and do it at 38,000. We do a lot of long distance and don't need lifter going bad on the road.

Has anyone had experience with the Feuling lifters?  How do they compare with the SE?

I remember Donny Peterson from American Iron recommending replacing lifters as a routine maintenance item.
-Can't remember how many miles.  Maybe 20 or 25K?
It's in one of the issues back several years ago.

That is a publisher sucking on the MoCo teat if there ever was one.  How can an ostensibly independent journalist write that prophylactic replacement of a major engine component four or five times in a hundred thousand miles should  be recommended?  Articles should be chastising the MoCo quite righteously for such a lack of reliability.  Too bad (for us) there really is an almost non-existent truly independent American press covering the industry.  Don't know what one would expect though when nearly all the rags have as much or more advertising space as articles.

I would also highly recommend changing out the cam inner bearing at the same time if you haven't done so already.  Torington seems to be the inner cam bearing of choice.  I would also recommend S&S lifters

Yes, if you have a 2012 or older bike, you need to change out the inner cam bearings as stated as they are another weak link.   The 2013's are supposed to have the updated bearings.

Then, you will probably find your hydraulic tensioners worn and possibly an oil pump.

The inner cam bearings are just about as bad as the lifters in failing.  Either item will take out the whole engine.
