« on: September 04, 2013, 05:04:54 PM »

First water-cooled, now this!

Has anyone heard of Harley-Davidson's new learner bike?

This has been promised since Buell went away.  They need a bike under 500cc to replace the blast used in Riders Edge.  Think it will be out in the next few months.

Harley DOES need a smaller, lighter, lower displacement bike! I would like to see them build one again.

But an ELECTRIC? NO WAY! In MY neck of the woods, a electric bike would be lucky to make it halfway to the North Georgia mountains! It might work in the flatlands, but not around here. Damn thing would be lucky to make it out of my neighborhood!

I wonder if  HD was working on a smaller bike to compete in the AMA Flat Track series that they spend so much money sponsoring and no bike in the singles category.

my understanding is that in Europe you cannot get a motorcycle license for a large Harley without showing that you spent some time with a smaller bike. They have motorcycle class ratings like we have with trucks I guess.

Let's face it; Harley must cultivate new riders. Many of us are getting older, we only have so many new bikes to own. I just bought a new 2014 Limited but my wife tells me that I'm not Harleys target market any more. I already have all the riding gear. New riders spend thousands getting set-up, I know my Harley dealer smiled every time I walked in, back in the day.

Regarding electric bikes? I don't see it in my lifetime but who knows the future. I never dreamed I would own a motorcycle with linked ABS brakes, GPS, and all the high tech stuff we take for granted. I have learned "never say never".

500cc is way too much bike for a beginning rider - too heavy, too much power.  Many MSF coaches think the 392cc Buell Blast is too much.  Rider's Edge has a higher crash incidence rate than other beginning rider classes.  I've taught in both environments and almost always had some sort of crash in a Rider's Edge class, very seldom in others and the very same curriculum is used in both.  With a totally new rider less is more.
