Dealer suggest the following checks
« on: September 17, 2013, 03:22:03 PM »

I wanted new lifters installed in my 38,000 mile 110 engine.  Dealer says that in order to do such, they need to check wear on cams, cam bearings, oil pump, cam chain tensioner shoes, and crank runout at the same time to insure that lifters are the noise makers.  Does this sound correct? Thanks for any advice.

If you want the lifters replaced they are probably going to install new bearings so the rest of the items you mentioned will already be accessable.  If you check You Tube search for the S&S lifter change, it will show all the parts you mentioned and what the job consist of.  It's not a complicated process but it does require a few specialized tools.  The crank run out should probably be done first just in case it is outside the factory specs.  Why put parts in a motor that will need to be replaced or rebuilt due to excessive crank run out.  I have the same year as you and my cams & lifters looked really good at 60,000 miles.  Although I changed the shoes and inspected it every 20,000 miles.  Some dealers like to push additional parts from the SE catalog.  If they do check back on the site for additional info.

Changing lifters ALONE does not necessitate opening the cam chest. -- that being said at 38,000 miles it might not be a bad idea to have them go in there and inspect all the mentioned item for any issues.

FWIW when they go in may as well go ahead and change the cam bearings to the new version and install new tensioner shoes.

But if you decide to do it yourself as is suggested by your comments in your other thread and just change lifters, since you already have adjustable pushrods you would only have to remove the  pushrods and lifter blocks  to get at the lifters.

If you pull the lifters yourself and find any wear marks on the old ones it would then be time to open up the cam chest ---- I know this from experience as that is what happened to mine - ended up with a whole compliment of new parts by the time it was all said and done...

At 38K, your dealer is giving you good advice. :2vrolijk_21:   I check all of the above yearly.

Along with checking the hard parts as mentioned at 38k the small parts mentioned should be changed prophylactically just because you're in there.

I knew the noun , but hadn't seen the adverb used before !

Very appropriate !

Thanks for all of the advice.  I'm going to bite the bullet and turn it over to the dealer and let him figure out the noise, replacing all parts as needed. Thanks again.

Keep in mind the Moco decided that 12 thou runout is ok and I think I heard that went up to 15thou recently but I would be worried if it is more than 3thou.

Completely remove and disassemble the engine.  Then send the crank out for corrective service to a warranty voiding third party service provider because it is a service Harley itself does not offer.

Yeah.....  and all because Mother Harley supplied a crap flywheel to begin with all too often.  Interesting process wherein they supply something well outside of recognized QC standards then use that supplied poor quality item as a way to both push more expense on the customer and vitiate future warranty in the process.  I believe the word we're after here is "racket."

Mine has too but now sounds like a machine gun upon deceleration until engine gets good and warm. Sounds like coming from left side.
