Center line rumble strips
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:19:55 PM »

I've ridden all over the country and have never, to the best of my recollection, come across centerline rumble strips on a 2-lane highway.

I just saw them for the first time on my JESTER Road Trip to Eureka Springs, AR.  They are indented into the new asphalt road pours down there and they are SCARY dry and they are gonna be NASTY after rain with little retained lakes of water in them!!  Nice engineering by some moron CAGER!! :)

They're doing the same thing on the outback roads here in Oregon....    I addressed my legislator on the issue and he said" yes, they do that in isolated areas where it take longer to get emergincy services to cut down on the accidents".  Nice for us on motorcycles, eh? [smiley=soapbox.gif]

When we're such a statistically small part of the number of vehicles on the road we will not be a priority.  I can understand and agree with rumble strips in the center can keep a driver from inadvertently fading across the center line.  The roads have to be built to keep the greatest number of people safe.  We're a small number.  As always, we have to keep ourselves safe.  Just part of being on the bike.

The DOT district in which I work has started experimenting w/ these as well. The test section we placed them in has had 0 fatalities in a notoriusly bad section of roadway where head ones where once common place. They do suck for bikes. When I mentioned how bad they where for us, the response was a  flipant "don't ride on them". The good news is that they're apparantly saving lives. I guess that really is more important and the willies we get crossing them.

The first time I drove from Seattle to Bremerton, about 15 years ago was the first time that I ever saw those reflective semi-speres that they put in the middle of the road in addition to white lines.
