ECM swap out?
« on: September 24, 2013, 12:17:08 AM »

Can a 2014 Dyna ECM be retro-fitted to a 2006 Dyna and if so what is needed/involved?
Cheers

A 2014 Dyna has the HDLAN (CAN bus) electrical system, and of course the 2006 model does not.  Without digging into all the tiny details I'll just say that while anything is possible with enough supporting cash and other mods to make it work, this would not be a viable swap.  Why would you want to do this?

Jerry is being nice.  The short answer is no.  The modules are physically different.  Such a retrofit would involve jacking up the gas cap and sliding the complete other bike underneath it.

why the 2014 ECM? If it's because that's what you have to work with, best to forget the idea.  That's going to be a very tough task.  If you simply want to switch to gain some features, you may want to consider a different route.  Joe Lyons retrofited his Dyna with a '10 and up touring ECM that allowed for lambda based tuning and DBW capabilities.  That would be an easier switch than trying to switch J1850 to Can bus.  The DBW conversion also made it possible for cruise control to be added to a Dyna.

Thanks for the replies guys, got it  ;D

Mayor I do remember Joe doing that, it was the canbus speed that prompted the thought, will be staying with what I have.....maybe one day I'll jack up the gas cap  :D
