Painting head pipes on '14 CVO Deluxe
« on: October 04, 2013, 01:50:33 PM »

I'm thinking about taking the head pipes off my wifes CVO Deluxe and painting them with a high temp flat black paint.  The chrome heat shields look great but the reflection from the oil bag shows the discolored pipe under the shield.  I'd like to paint them so the pipe looks good in the reflection and also keep the chrome shields on.  Has anyone done this before?  How well did the paint hold up?  And what brand paint did you use?
Thanks in advance!

VHT flame proof exhaust paint in the rattle can will work. You can pick it up at most Autzone or Advance Auto parts stores. I put several coats on my V&H Powerdual pipe and it is holding up pretty well. Its a thin pain so yo need to do a light scuff and clean the outside of the pipes to remove all contaminates and oils to get it to adhere well. Let the pipes bake in the sun to cure between coats

Rattle can paint jobs on exhaust pipes won't usually last very long, but you can help extend the time between repainting by doing a very thorough prep first.  When you get tired of removing the exhaust system to strip and repaint, look into one of the professionally applied coatings like Jet-Hot.  They offer many colors, so you aren't limited to flat black, and they guarantee their work.

Thanks guys, I went with the VHT rattle can approach since it is just a small area I'm trying to clean up.  It looks great hanging on a wire drying.  Hopefully it will last.
THanks!

Once you install the pipes do yourself a favor and break the paint job in right. Start the bike and just let it idle for a very short time and shut it off. You want the pipes to get warm but not smoke. This helps cure the paint properly. Do this a few times with a cool down in-between and the paint will last much longer.

He's right, don't go for a ride yet. Warm it up (depending on how far down the pipe it is, maybe 10~ 30 seconds the first time) and let it cool back to ambient. I'd do this at least three times, increasing the heat a little each time. Experience on numerous headers, BBQ pits, etc speaking.

The bad news: No matter how well even the best paint is cured, NO paint is going to survive in the first few inches from the head.

If you are going through the trouble to pull them off, why not send them to Jet Hot for ceramic coating  :nixweiss:

I can't speak for Steve, but yes, that is the correct way to properly cure the coating based on my experience AND based on the instructions from VHT.  See attachment:

Will keep you posted.  Did 250 miles yesterday and it still looks good.   :D  Hoping for about a 1000 more before the snow blocks her in the garage....
