There could possibly be something inside of the cap not allowing it to go all the way down. I had this happen to me but it was ice that did not allow it to go all the way down. I put it under hot water at that time and it was ok after that. Don't think you have ice at this time of the year but it could be dirt.

Actually....yes. Just noticed it on my way back from Myrtle beach yesterday. Haven't had time to check it out.

Mine started doing it also. It appears the o-ring tends to bind in the filler neck and prevents twisting the cap as far in as when it was new. I put a thin coating of lithium grease on the o-ring and it now seats flush again. Maybe not the best solution but it works for now.

Sounds like a plan.  That rubber ring must swell from the gas.

I noticed same on my 2011 SG.  where did you put the lithium grease?  Is it possible to replace the washer/gasket that's under there?

most of them don't ,
However , don't try to force it.
If you do more than "bump " tight on the gas cap it will leak.
I have had several friends that were doing this and when I told them not to turn it so tight their caps quit leaking .
Pain in the a$$ I know--------------just quit looking at it.
