Progressive 444 shocks
« on: October 08, 2013, 02:06:28 PM »

I am looking to upgrade the suspension on my FLHTCUSE8 and I am interested in the Progressive 444 shocks.  I have done a search on this site and found very little new information on them, seems most was from 2005.  I know they claim to have made some advancements in the shocks over the years.  Does anybody have experience with these on the newer bikes?  Forks will be next item to address but one step at a time I have to keep budget in mind.  :)

Installed a set on my '12 SESG...... LOVE THEM  :2vrolijk_21:

Put a set of Progressive Mono Tubes up front with 444's in the rear on your '13
& you'll feel like you're riding a new bike

I have 444HD's on my '06 Ultra. I'm 230 lbs. I have the shocks set at minimum reload. The ride is firm, but doesn't bottum out and goes over uneven roads smoothly. When my wife rides with me the ride is perfect.

I am also interested in these shocks so I called Progressive.  I weigh 200 lbs and want a softer ride, they recommended the standard 13 inch none HD shocks.  My only concerns are how difficult will they be to adjust behind the saddle bags.
If I have to remove the storage boxes I may go with the Harley premium ride shocks.

I have the Progressive monotube on the front and 944s' on the back. You adjust them by hand with the pressure off of the shock. Once you find the sweet spot you will leave it alone. You don't have to adjust after every ride or normally from 1 to 2 up.

There are MUCH better shocks on the market than the 444's...the 9xx series are better.  Bitubo's are even better than the 9xx series.  Harley Davidson does not make a single suspension component that I would waste my money on.

Do you have personal experience with 444's?

I have ridden bikes with the 440's on them and was not impressed.  On a scale of 1-10, I'd say they are a 3 or 4.  Anything is better than the stock crap though.  But, if I'm going to spend money on shocks, I'm going to at least try and purchase something that is a significant change and only do it once.

So to answer your question...No, I have not ridden a bike with the 444's.  But since they are a replacement for the 440 series, I'd be surprised if they were better than a 5 on the scale.

I just rode 100 miles of back roads on my Öhlin rear shocks today. Could not be happier. Great improvement over stock.
