I needed to see someone to look at theirs, or even better what Chuck did. Note how the distance from the top of the filter to the hoses. Mine isn't like that anymore.

Take some photo's of yours and post them here.  When you say "top" of your filter for instance, and then say it's an inch shorter than before, I think you're confusing things.  The filter has two dimensions, the length and the diameter.  It's very simple to measure both dimensions and then compare to the stock Harley filter.  If the filter on your bike has the same dimensions as a stock Harley filter, then the difference you're seeing is most likely caused either by the previous filter NOT being a standard size filter OR the person who changed the filter repositioned the cooler hoses.  Why not just ask him?

Jerry, it is the distance of the top on the oil filter to the hoses, or the distance of space between the two. Mine used look like Chuck's photo above, but now it's is further away. I assumed that there was a spacer or something like a different oil filter, but mines 3 1/2 inches long, so it's not the filter and the diagram shows no spacers or anything.

There is not nor has there ever been a spacer block on the OE installations.  Your filter dimensions seem to be what everyone would expect.  You're worrying about something that is a non-issue.  Either the hoses were simply moved a bit by the servicer, the prior filter was an oddball of some kind or you're not remembering correctly how it looked before.  But there's nothing there to be wrong with what you're describing now.

Post a pic to see if that will show more than what you're describing.  Otherwise; don't worry be happy.

No Twolane, I think it's a combination of them leaving out the filter spacer and using a shorter filter.  This could spell disaster!   :nervous:

Actually.......   I'm guessing the filter was mounted inverted.  But in tapping the other end it shortened the entire assembly.    Also concerned that vortices will develop at speed off the end of the filter and spin up the rider's left pant leg leading to cheap thrill induced accidents.
