Extended warranty... Should I ??
« on: October 21, 2013, 08:16:06 PM »

Still thinking about this expensive warranty...  Not sure if I should buy it, so I thought I should ask experts....

My Breakout is my first CVO, and as usual, the dealer offered the extended warranty... Since the first time I bought my first Walkman, I never bought an extended warranty on anything, and I consider myself a winner until now...  My Rocker C never disappointed me, never cost me a dime for 50 000 km.

Now, I am questioning myself.  With that expensive bike and the price tag that probably go with repairs, should I go for it?  3-5 or 7 years?

The bike will stay stock (well maybe not the pipes), I can do minor repairs, oil change, wire lubrication...  ???  Oops, no wire on this one...  But what I saw you guys do, trying a set of cams on a weekend just for fun !!!!  No way I will ever dismantle a part that as more than 2 bolts on it...

I intend to run the bike for 5-6 years before placing it on the stage, riding around 6000-7000 miles a year...

I know nobody can predict the future, but I would appreciate some advices from long time CVO riders...

I would get the warranty. After all HD is not known for their first pass quality.

I purchased it on mine that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully wasted money but I was thinking better safe than sorry.

I bought it. Along with the tire and wheel warranty. We're getting into traveling on the bike and it's piece of mind for me.

I've had my Ultra since late May, had 2 tires replaced by the ESP so far.  ESP cost $1700 or so, tires and labor (so far) are somewhere around $700.  I bought the bike used, so there's 5-1/2 years left on the ESP.

I feel confident that it will have paid for itself by then.

It's a bit less to purchase the ESP at the time of bike purchase (they did it that way on purpose to entice you into it...).  However, it's still not that much more if you wait(ed) until toward the end of your factory warranty.  That's the route I'm headed.  My factory runs out in March, 2014 so I plan on the 5 year ESP sometime in February.  Still pondering on getting the wheel/tire included with that as I've never had any issues with wheels before on any of my HD's (defects or damage) and tires are pro-rated in the ESP so unless you use it right at the start of the tire purchase, may not even out money wise.
There are quite a few HD dealers that sell them in the States for a good discount (Jim Palmer at Kutter HD comes to mind 608-314-1722) but I notice you are in Canada and there are some threads going around concerning the issues with purchasing an ESP in the US from Canada (some coverage issues up to and including no coverage).  May want to search the forum to research that.

Good luck...

Tires are not prorated.  If you have at least 3/32" tread left, you're covered gratis.  Less than 3/32", you're on your own.

I bought the longest ESP available when I bought my used '08 FLHTCUSE3 last December from a dealer. It has already more than paid for itself! I also bought the wheel and tire coverage at the same time. It has not payed off yet - I recently brought my bike in because the rear tire was separating, but the tire replacement was not covered as it was deemed a tire defect (Metzeler 880), and since the tire did not fail while I was driving it (thank God!) it was not covered as a road hazard. I guess I should have drove a nail into the tire in the dealer's parking lot!

Depends if you are more concerned about dollars or piece of mind.

Running a bike for 5 to 6 years with 30K miles, I might not get it.  However, I ride more than 20K miles per year, and my warranty has so far paid out more than 7K in repairs.  Money well spent.  Just wish I had bought the 7 year rather than 5 year plan.

I bought the full term extended service agreement on my last three bikes and on Terrie's bike.  They all paid for theirselves multiple times over and when it came time to sell the bikes (still covered by the extended warranty).

If you're a rider and it's not just garage jewelry, it pays to get it.  By the way, it covered the new motor in Terrie's bike (96" motor) and complete rebuild on the motor in my bike, about a year apart, due to the flywheels scissoring.  That's not counting the peace of mind you have when you're out there racking up those miles. :nixweiss:

I purchased the ESP on my two CVO's and glad I did... The '05 has had over $3k of work done on it under the plan.  The '08 (touch wood) has been problem free to date, but it is the peace of mind as others have mentioned that makes it all worth it to me.

Just wish I had bought the 7 year rather than 5 year plan.
so extend it when it expires.  as long as you don't have over 12 years, and 75,000 miles, you can renew it.  if you're close to that time frame or mileage, then renew for the max term available.

Uh, 12 years & 75,000 miles, eh?

In Canada it's 10 years & 100,000 kilometers.

I guess that just means Canadian bikes ARE faster after all!   :2vrolijk_21:

I wonder what it is throughout the rest of the world?   :nixweiss:

OK, here is my two cents worth.  First, you're riding one of the less complicated models as opposed to a fully equipped Touring bike, so there is less to go wrong.  Second, it depends on your view of life.  Are you a short term person or a long term person?  I've refused all ESP's offered to me since they became popular in the 80's, and I conservatively estimate that I've saved tens of thousands of dollars over all those years by NOT buying them.  ESP's are huge money makers for the folks selling them.  That should tell you something.

If a person rides a ton of miles per year, doesn't intend to modify the bike, and has a history of bad luck with mechanical stuff then perhaps it makes sense to "bet" a couple grand against possible future repair costs.  On the other hand, folks who ride a few thousand miles a year would probably be better off putting that money in a safe investment that could be used in the future if a repair is needed, and if not it becomes found money they can spend or save as they see fit.  Like I said earlier, it also depends on how short term versus long term you are in your thought process.  Long term, very few will come out ahead buying ESP's.

JMHO - Jerry

Oh, I forgot to mention one other thing.  If thoughts of failures and repair costs are keeping anyone awake at night, perhaps they should think more about the quality and reliability of the product before they buy, and less about paying extra for insurance to help pay for any failures.  Just sayin'.

I bought mine on the 07 well worth the money. saved at least $10,000.00 plus one rear tire. Just bought the new 14 SERK and bought the warranty. extra 5 years. They gave me 20% discount on the plan. I  ride 10k plus a year. If you only ride 2 or 3 K a year I would save my money.  Billy
