Heat Demons heated grip installation
« on: October 27, 2013, 02:42:02 PM »

After yesterday's ride I realized that I require the comfort afforded by heated grips to better enjoy cold weather rides. I was wondering if anyone has installed the Heat Demons heated grips on a CVO with TBW and hydraulic clutch and if so, any words of advice.

Thank you in advance,

My experience with heated grips is that they keep the inside of your hands warm but not the outside. The outside of your hands is exposed to the weather and will cool down a lot faster then the palms. I wear electric gloves which can be controlled are much easier to put on then heated grips and keep the entire hand toasty and I have ridden in temps below 25.

Even removed the heated grips from my 2013 and use the gloves. Of course I also wear the jacket liner and pants. Toasty everywhere with dual controller.

Many threads on the subject.....

Mostly from 07/08 and lots of comparison threads. There are new models from Heat Demons (211055) specifically for TBW. I was hoping for updated installation info if possible.

You just have to be a bit more careful when removing the grips so that you do not damage the sensor.  Other than that, it's exactly the same.

As far as gloves and heated grips...Lee Parks makes a pair of gloves specifically designed to work with heated grips.  Deerskin PCI Gloves.  They are reviewed here: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-gloves/deerskin-insulated/

They are expensive, but worth every penny, IMO.  I also have his summer riding gloves.

Heated grips are real nice to have. Sometimes you just don't need the big bulky gloves. And as mentioned above, you never leave them on the bench.

If you go for the Lee Parks gloves - make sure they fit. Don't just try them on, wrap your hands around a handlebar and give it a good grip. I bought a pair from Fox Creek ($180).

In the store they fit fine, but once I rode with them for some time it was apparent that the pinky is too short and did not match the averge length of any other glove I use. And, the seam is at the tip of the finger, causing numbness after an hour or so.

No returns at Fox Creek and when I spoke with Lee at the NYC bike show he was rather indignant about my comment about the gloves being cut wrong. Although he did offer a discount on a new pair.

As to the claim that the gloves were made to work with heated grips  :nixweiss:
My own experience is the claim holds little water. I don't see any heat transfer difference between any of my gloves of similar weight.

Wait...what?
I have bought several items from FCL and many of my friends have as well. Returns have never been an issue. Their return policy is clearly stated on their website.
I returned gloves that didn't fit right (replaced right away) and returned a vest just because I decided that I didn't like the style. Replaced with an alternate model immediately, shipped to me on the honor system before I sent the return.
There are clearly stated cases where returns are not allowed, such as when items are modded or "used" etc.

Your blanket statement of "no returns at Fox creek" is flat wrong and unfounded in my experience with them.

Wasn't a blanket statement. No returns on the gloves I bought and used. I bought them at the store, because I needed gloves due to a weather change. Wore them home and they were not returnable, as I posted.

Cam,

If you can, consider both heated gloves and heated grips. I like NOT having to pull over and swap gloves. Plus in order to use the gloves, you have to be using the jacket liner too.

Out here in California it can be 90 in the valley, but drop over the mountains onto the coast and it's misty and in the 50's. I like being able to zip up the jacket, flick a switch and keep on riding. But when it gets really cold, then stop. strip, put on the heated liner and the heated gloves.

So consider the issue of space too. If you have bags and a tour pack, space is not an issue and you can carry all that stuff. If you don't have a place to store it, then space might be an issue too.

Good point. I have a CVO BO and no way to carry anything other than what I have on. So heated grips it is.

Thanks,
