Almost crashed
« on: November 02, 2013, 06:25:10 PM »

Traveling down the road today with my wife on the back and the rear tire blow out. We were going about 65 mph. At first it was no problem until I slowed to about 35 mph and then the problems started. I used all two lanes to keep it from going down. How we did not crash is beyond me. Thank God there was no one coming the other way. I told my wife we are done as soon as I heard the bang. Time to clean the shorts and take a nap...New tires on the way and i hope to be back on the road by mid week.

Happended to me & wife about 40 years ago. I had on tennis shoes & they were melted to my socks when I got it stopped. Nothing but boots for me since then. Glad both of you came out un-scathed!! You can buy new drawers  :huepfenlol2:

What was the issue when you slowed down?

Good to hear you pulled it through.

Coming back from NM Renay had a flat on her Ultra rear tire.  We were going about 60 mph.  I was following her and saw it blow.  We were on a 3 lane interstate and in the middle lane.  It took about 300 yards to wrestle it to the right lane and get it on the shoulder.  She did an outstanding job considering it was her first flat.  Steering becomes next to impossible because the MC wants to stand right back up when you try to turn the handlebar.

Glad your OK. In the past I have had both kinds of flats. Rear and front but not at the same time. Front tire flat was scarier for me at least. I have been riding over 45 years now. Still riding. Still loving it!

Whew, glad you got it stopped without crashing.  Scary for sure.  What caused the blowout, do you know?

Looks like the problem was all my fault. On Friday I noticed the tire was low and I was right next to a tire shop. They found a hole and plugged it and sent me on my way. The tire was not flat and after I noticed it was low I went a very short distance. The end result was I must have damaged the sidewall. Still can't believe I did not crash and if there was a car coming towards me i would not be sending this message...

Key word here is "ALMOST".

I had it happen to me on my old Deuce on a back road running only about 35. I didn't notice it at all until the sharp S turn. Then.........Holy Schmoly! Did not put it down but was a monster to handle.

Congrats on the save! Really, Way To Go!

I have a repair kit with motorcycle specific type plugs - they have a mushroom head and a tool to insert the plug.  Used it to repair a friends tire last month but  wouldn't trust any plug for long.  Glad you got through.

Plugs are a hit & miss for sure. Picked up a pop top in Daytona one year, all shops were 3 deep so I plugged it. After a week of ridin & partyin I forgot about it and rode the tire til slick. Caught a nail on a road trip in Idaho, plugged it, got up next morning to a flat. Plugs & motorcycle tires don't play well together!!!!
