  • LET'S GO RIDING!

I had my 2011 FLTRUSE in for work, as part of the work I asked the Dealer to replace my front fork fluid with Screaming Eagle Heavy. When I got it back, the forks only have a maximum of 2 inches of travel. From the resting position with no weight on it, they compress about 3/4 inch then seem to hit something solid. The dealer did say they took the forks apart to clean them and install the new oil. What could be put together incorrectly that would limit the travel this much? Any ideas where to look or what I can do short of taking it back to the dealer--they are 4 1/2 hours away. Thanks for any help.

Perhaps used too much oil.  If an actual assembly error here's the exploded view.  Parts manuals are more important for the illustrations than they ever are for part numbers.

Thanks Twolane, I have the parts manual and I've had forks apart but I can't figure what would limit travel that much.

Same thought... a buddy overfilled his trying to DYI and hit a pothole and blew the line out of the top cap (this was on a 2000 FLTR with front air fittings... made an ugly mess when all the oil was all over him.)

Continued use like that could result in seal failure or worse yet, loss of control and thus a crash.

Let the dealer fix it.

I would drain the oil and refill with the correct amount. (I to suspect to much oil)

I would as well, but a drain and fill would use less oil than a complete RnR. (I recall seeing that in a service manual for some bike years ago)

I suspect it's too much oil as responded to begin with. But I wouldn't drain it and refill on my own. He just paid the dealer to do that work. Whatever the problem it should be the dealer's responsibility to fix.

Dealer is 4.5 hours away (According to OP), a nice 9 hour round trip for getting the oil changed in the forks, I do it myself with that option

If the OP does this and it fixes the problem, he wins. If it doesn't then the dealer may use the 'you messed with it' excuse. I'd make the 9 hour trip and seek some type of repay/discount in return. Call the dealer.....complain......& see what they say.

And besides posting it on the web so the world can see the dealer would never know I changed the oil in the fork  :nixweiss:

Had missed the 9 hour trip detail.  That's a sucky choice.  I'd not have gone on a nine hour round trip for a basic service to begin with but, once that's been done, you're left with either eating the effort or spending a bunch of time and some fuel money to follow up.

Sorry you're having the trouble man.  Were I in your saddle I'd call the shop and let them know there's a problem.  They'll ask something like "why'd you leave if you noticed a problem" or say (at best) "sure, bring it back."  Then you're still stuck with going a long way and losing a lot of time for what's likely a small problem.

Then I'd get grumpy and say something like "thanks for my last service with your shop" and fix it myself.  Then I'd ride away from the shop so they could see the rear of my bike and read my license plate.

You are correct, and I am quite sure many dealers and for sure the MoCo poke around on this forum. And other sites also, except those that spend all their time slashing each other.

You might have to change your plate to be specific to that dealership instead of generic MoCo...
