discoloration on Boarzilla heat-shield
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:54:44 PM »

I just put in a 120r with a Boarzilla pipe about 3000 miles ago. Motor runs and sounds amazing but have got a "band" of discoloration on the heat-shield about 4 inches from the cylinder head. I remember reading a post on this some time ago and someone said they had got this from the band that holds on the shield and sure enough, there is a band right where it is. My questions are 1) will D&D warranty this? (I did not buy from the dealer as a friend of mine that works for a dealership bought it for me direct from the company to get the employee deal from D&D) 2) how do I attach the shield if the band that holds it on does this?
I know the post I read about this had these answers but don't know how to get to that thread.
I appreciate the help!

That is JSwerve that had that issue. I have the same thing going on. Going to tear it off this winter and look into it.

I'm on my 3rd heat shield good luck getting it to stop. I have spoken with D&D on several occasions and they say it's the tune. I am calling BS. I have had Fuelmoto working with me my tune is flawless and the bike runs flawless. My AFR is perfect all the way through each RPM range. This is the last D&D pipe I am going to put on any of my bikes.

I wrapped the rear pipe and then kind of crowded on the heat shield as that was and is the hot spot guess that is why I have no heat mark on my Zilla. Made it more bearable it was black when I put it on and now is kind of white.

If you place some heat wrap just around the pipe where the heatshield attachs to the pipe it pretty much stops it. The heat wrap needs to be the cloth type not the metal type. The cloth will not put as much heat into the clamp and heat shield.

We shouldn't have to wrap anything. If they had it coated like Drago does we wouldn't have an issue. I am going to sell my pipe and buy Franks.

While this is the way I feel as well, the heat wrap does solve it for those not willing or able to afford a new pipe.

This is the CVO forums I think we can all afford a new pipe Steve  ;D If you are ok with the quality it really doesn't apply to ya.

I have gone round and round with D&D and I have been a loyal customer and backer since 2010 when I installed a fatcat on my 2009 FLHX. That pipe was excellent, never had any trouble. This model sucks. I have personally seen 4 or 5 other CVO's running the same pipe with the same discoloration at local bike nights. They made a mistake in their process and they haven't been willing to admit and/or correct it. That's not the kind of company I want taking my money. Bummer, I really loved this pipe and the look/sound.

fortunately I am not having the same problem however, I just installed Borazilla's on my glide last week. Picked the bike up on Friday and went for a small ride Saturday A.M., pipes were literally cooking my leg.
took the shields off and wrapped both pipes---(shields do not fit back properly due to the narrow distance between the pipe and shield.) The pipes are very way cooler now which made me inspect my factory pipes and shields, big difference betwen the air gap. I feel that the D&D heat sheilds are too close to the pipe to be advantageous---just my 2 cents worth

That makes sense so let me ask you this, if we can see that, why can't D&D see and acknowledge and then correct it???? I am tired of my right leg feeling literally like it's on fire!

J,

You may not have the discoloration issue with the Drago's 2>1 but the heat under your leg isn't going away with the new pipe if you picked the Dragula as the rear exhaust port bends are just about identical to the the D&D. Just something to consider.....

It would be nice if it was fixed but from what you and other are saying that doesn't sound like it coming anytime soon. My offer on how to stop it from happening comes from having a friend that has the same issue with one. I wrapped just the pipe at the clamp mount points, as a let's try it an see, test and it stopped it for him. It also increased the air gap from the pipe to the shield which may have also helped some. He is happy so I felt I could share it with others in the same boat. Me, myself and I didn't like any of them so I just made my own for my personal bike, so now you know how I fixed it for myself  :)

Can you email that fix to D&D? Maybe they will start shipping exhaust wrap with every pipe for a small fee  :nixweiss:  :huepfenlol2:

It is only happening on the front pipe for whatever thats worth. was tuned by Bob at RC Cycles so I don't believe it can be the tune, Runs fantastic. Did D&D replace the shield for those of you that called them? If they do, I will try the wrap under the clamp. Though it does piss me off that it happened, I love the performance/sound of the pipe and if I had to make a choice, I would still get them. With that said though, I do expect them to stand behind their product and replace that shield. Will see how this goes. I am just stupid enough that if they don't I will buy another shield and try the wrap underneath. I am too old now to "cut of my nose"...
I get that doesn't make it (or me) right...
