They will charge you tax on what you paid.  If your bill of sale documents $500.00, that's what you will pay tax on.  Soooooooooo, common sense may allow you to pay a more reasonable amount of tax - if you catch my drift.

Chris

They put a stop to that in TX. Although they are still a few loopholes.

I recently flew up to North Carolina and bought a used motorcycle.  I paid no sales tax there.  I rode the bike back to Florida on temporary tags issued by the owner who is also a car/bike dealer.  Since I took possession of the bike out of Florida, am I exempt from paying Florida sales tax on the purchase when I go to the DMV to change the title and register the bike in Florida?   Does anyone know?

The Florida Sales Tax is $50 and 6% of the sales price written and signed by both the buyer and seller in transfer area on the title and/or the Bill Of Sale.

If you have a domicile (address) in one of the states with no sales tax ( or a capped sales tax ) and register in that state for 6 months or more, then bring the vehicle to FL, you just pay a nominal 1 time registration fee.

Don't believe the next post. The DMV isn't that dumb. If the price doesn't seem reasonable then they will go to the books and come up with at taxable price. ALSO, they will want to see the motorcycle. They actually do walk out and inspect the bike and compare the title serial number with the bike serial number on both the motor and the frame. Any alterations and you will have a hard time of it. There is also a tag/registration fee that is large too.

OFFSETS: If you traded with a out of state dealer you will be paying tax on only the difference between the trade price and the sales price.

Good luck.

I was afraid they might be smarter than that. In NC they don't care what you paid......tax is off book value.

Arizona is the same.  No sales tax on used privately purchased vehicles.  If you purchase a used vehicle from a dealer, then you pay the tax.

Cowboy

Hawaii is the same....

Yup, they sure will do that.  Back in the 80s I bought a used pos motorcycle trailer - all fiberglass, no reinforcement, no suspension for just a few hundred dollars.  The company's name was 'Eagle' so the title I took to the DMV for transfer had that name.  I had no idea that there was a truck by the name of Eagle and the clerk insisted the vehicle was worth several thousand dollars.  I finally got her supervisor to process the transaction but a few weeks later I got a notice from the state dept of revenue advising that I owed quite a bit in sales tax and if not paid I could have a judgment entered against me.  Finally got a brochure from the trailer manufacturer and sent it to them and got it all cleared up.  Moral, do not underestimate the tenacity of the government when it comes to getting your money!
