FINALLY! Harley has issued a "Product Program" for coolant issue
« on: November 29, 2013, 02:15:02 PM »

Just learned that Harley announced a "Product Program" for some of the twin cooled bikes. My 2014 Limited was included. it is product notice 0916: PRD PGM: Twin-Cool Fill NK

My dealer has not received any kits for this "Program". Not sure if they redesigned a new filler neck or just figured out that some of the factory filler necks had defects and need replacement. I am also not sure if the filler neck that was installed in my bike is the program replacement or if their will be another new one.

The good news, Harley has figured out what is wrong and it is really pretty simple. we should know more soon. I was able to pull up the program notice on Harleys web site under recall information.

UPDATE!!! My dealer just called me, the program kit is a different fill neck replacement than the one in my bike. This is a new updated part. Gives me some comfort knowing the issue was not a batch of substandard parts, the problem was the part itself. This should take care of the coolant issue once and for all.

And that's why I'm waiting until late spring to get my new bike.

I was told by my dealer that the coolant fill neck fix has a vin number cut-off. I would assume that any bikes being built today will have the new update included, It's a pretty simple update for those of us that need it. Those buying new bikes today will be in good shape, they won't go through any of the leak problems the early buyers experienced. Like me.

A new coolant fill neck should fix all those leaky thermostat housings?   :confused5:

Different issue, material related, not the case with the filler neck

My bad. I was looking at it from a "it leaks" point of view.  Understand.

That still does not take care of the overheating problems that most early models may have. The VIN cutoff is most likely because they stopped production for 30 days to try to address the problems

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I experienced leaks three times,I never overheated. This bike runs much cooler than my 07 CVO ultra. No comparison.

Never overheated either. Not sure what the reason for that would be? Only difference from 2013 is no oil cooler. (Besides LC exhaust valves)

Do you have some details regarding the claim on overheating?

He isn't talking about YOU overheating, he's talking about the coolant system overheating. ;)

There were issues with the clamps, other issues with the thermostat housing, issues with the pressure caps (which were likely tied in with this filler neck issue), and then there were issues where the fans didn't operate as originally designed.  When you have a very tiny quantity of fluid (1 quart) to absorb and transfer all that heat from the exhaust side of the heads, it doesn't take long for the pressure to build and force fluid out the overflow if the fans don't run when they're supposed to.

Anyhow, I think the point being made by dlaws01 and DCFIREMAN was that this "Product Program" only seems to be addressing one of the several reported failure causes, so your earlier comment about the program ("This should take care of the coolant issue once and for all.") isn't necessarily true.  It sounds like something Harley or one of it's dealers might say, but that doesn't make it so if you know what I mean.

I think it would behoove us to wait to read the actual Service Bulletin that will eventually be published for this program, and to wait for some real world feedback after the "upgrades", before declaring this issue fixed for good.  I personally hope that is the case, for all those who bought one, but based on past experiences with H-D I can't help but be a bit cynical.  Hopefully they will contact ALL the folks who purchased a Twin Cooled bike prior to the cut-off date and provide ALL the various fixes that have been added to the production bikes.

OK, every one just needs to be patient and wait for a company like S&S or Fueling to build a supper nice billet replacement H2O cooling system for the 2014 and newer bikes. Will be able to swap the whole system and never have problems again. Just like with the rest of the parts on our bikes, they are all nice reliable billet aftermarket. Cheers.

Exactly Jerry.

There is a problem with the temp sensors. There are two. One for the engine and one for the heads. These two are fighting each other and one has problems with it's actual temp values. It is reading a much lower temp then what the actual temp is. I know the MOCO has a new update for the ECM but I am not sure if that fixed the problem.

Give it time they will figure it out.

Coolant system recall ?
« Reply #14 on: December 02, 2013, 05:48:25 PM »

My bike has 2,800 miles and already has had the thermostat replaced - now it's leaked all the coolant out on the garage floor and is going back to the dealer for a recall on the cooling system - Harley has just started to ship these kit's out to the dealers and my vin is involved in the campaign. You may want to check with your dealer to see if your bike's vin is part of the coolant system recall.
