garage door opener
« on: December 01, 2013, 08:22:16 PM »

Aside from some of the more "exotic models" in some earlier threads, has anyone installed the HD electronic garage door opener? I think it's been available for some time now but how is it to install on lets say a 2013 SERK? Do I have to remove the tank, get additional harnesses etc. How about the other end? Does it just wire in parallel with the wall switch in the garage? It looks like a pretty good setup if it's not a nightmare to install.

Thanks,

Evo

I don't know about the 2013.  I installed one in the headlight bucket of my cousin's Fatboy.  It's a pretty straight forward install.  The high beam wire is the switch that makes the opener work.  Slick as hell and no looking for the garage door opener when you pull in.  You can buy the bike module for additional bikes too.

Installed one on an older Road King. Was not to bad. Mounted the box up on the neck area of the frame and ran the power wires down the backbone to the fuse box. It did require tank removal but that really is not a big deal. Tagged into the hi/low wires and good to go. The unit I got came with good directions and everything you need to hook it up. You might need some heat shrink connectors and electrical tape but nothing major. As far as the wall unit, again no big deal, hooked in parellel with wall swith and plug into 120v outlet. Still have to learn bike to receiver but that was easy too. Good Sunday afternoon project while watching football and drinking a six pack!!!

Follow this link for the installation instructions, read the parts for installing the transmitter to the bike for the FLHR models and see if you feel comfortable doing the install.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J02028.pdf

As for compatibility with your particular garage door opener, that depends.  It's very simple to install on older openers with simple open or close control panels.  It's not as simple with some of the new "Smart" openers that have many other functions besides opening and closing the door.  For instance the latest Chamberlain openers with a control panel that displays time, temp, backup battery status (if so equipped), has motion control for the lights, and I forget what else, don't work with the Harley setup unless you come up with a workaround for the wiring connection.  There are some threads on the site that explain the workarounds; they aren't technically difficult but you do have to deviate from the standard Harley instructions.

I found with my eglide that it was better to just eliminate the Harley system and use an extra remote made for my new door opener.  I opened the case, found the two contacts that activate the open/close function, soldered a wire to each, then mounted the remote inside the fairing and ran the wires to a simple SPST push button switch I added to the dash.  Much better range than the Harley system without the various dead spots I always had with the Harley system.  Yes you have to take your hand off the grip to press the button, versus flipping the high beam switch on the bar.  Hasn't been a problem or hindrance for me.

That probably depends on if I'm just leaving or coming home!  :drink: Actually it doesn't look that tough, thanks for the link!

If anyone out their wants to install the opener on a 14, be aware: the garage door opener says that it fits a multitude of years, the instructions included in the box actually are only accurate up to 2013. The 2014 models require different wiring, the correct instructions are available to the tech's at the dealership through their MoCo tech web site.

If anyone has the system installed in their bike by a dealer tech I would recommend asking the tech to "par" or sync the bike to the receiver on the bench. That way you know it will work and most important, it makes the final installation of the receiver easy as can be in your garage.

I learned these two things the hard way. had the opener installed on my 14 Limited by the dealer, the tech installed as shown on the instructions and of course, I got home and it did not work. Took the bike back and he corrected. I asked the tech to "par" or sync the bike with the receiver and it made installation in my garage a snap.

You will love having this feature, its just nice to be able to flip the high, low beam switch and watch the door open. It has pretty good range as well. This is a must have

Put one on my '13 SERK and it was no problem.  Just followed the directions that came with the unit. After having the garage door opener on my Ultra I decided I wanted one on the RK.

My '09 SE Ultra came with the GDO.  When I recently traded it in,  I kept the (receiver) in my garage and negotiated the (transmitter) to be installed on the new bike as part of the deal.  Harley lists both the transmitter and receiver available separately as well as a package deal.

This looks like it works pretty much the same way, has anyone ever used this type? It doesn't say H-D on it anyplace so naturally it's a lot cheaper!

I have a 2012 Ultra and have tried to match it to an Overhead Door Odyssey 1000 and have had no good results. I do not think it is compatible with it and if someone has been successful, I would sure like to hear from them. Mine is sitting on the shelf. Thank you.

My CVO came with the GDO, but I can't get it to work.  I threw the receiver on a shelf where it is part of my dust collection.  I messed with it for hours until I couldn't stand it anymore and gave up.  I just use the clicker that I already had with my garage door.  I'll probably end up selling the Harley GDO receiver on it's own.

The '05 came with the GDO, had transmitters installed in the '01 and the '09 all 3 work like a champ. Really like 'em :pepper: :cherry: :bananarock:

Came on my '09 CUSE, loved it. Had to put one on the '13 SERK. Only problem is my Son now rides the '09 and lives about 1/2 mile down the road from me. My garage door mysteriously opens every time he rides by. I'm gonna killem!!!  :drink:

I would recommend taking your receiver to your dealer;  ask them to sync your bike up with the receiver. They will find out real quick if you have anything wrong, once everything is synced up it will make installation of the receiver a snap. All you will need to do is install the receiver to your opener and that's less than a 5 min. job. you will love it. IMHO
