Advice On Long Distance P/U and Ride Home
« on: November 12, 2006, 09:33:31 PM »

Hi Again,

I am flying up to NC Thursday (Cold) to ride my New B & O SEUC HOME!  I have a couple questions.

1. What do I need to tell the dealer to add for power plug(s) for a heated vest?
2. What have you done as a must have at time of delivery that I can also consider?
3. Being familiar with some of the paint issues, is there anything else I should have my rep look for this week before I get there?
4.  During break-in, considering this ride, anyone have any special tips? Besides the Hot Blackberry Brandy that is.

I will be coming back to Florida over the weekend. The Weather Window looks like I may be cold, but clear. Headed to where it is almost going to be tolerable.

Thanks in advance,

Rhino

The thing that would concern me the most is the "Break-In First 500 Miles". I also picked up my bike in NC, but opted to bring it back home on a trailer because of the break-in procedure.

This is quoted from my owners manual (2004 SEEG), and would think it would be similar to a FLHTCUSE2....

1. Riding the first 50 miles (80 kilometers) avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long distances. Keep the engine speed below 3000 RPM in any gear. Do not lug the engine in higher gears by running or accelerating at very low RPM. Do not exceed mph for each gear as noted below...

1st - 22MPH
2nd - 32MPH
3rd - 45MPH
4th - 57MPH
5th - 70MPH
6th - (You'll have to check your manual as I don't have that capability)

2. Up to 500 miles (800 Kilometers) avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long distances. Engine speed up to 3500 RPM is permissible. Do not exceed mph for each gear as noted below...

1st - 25MPH
2nd - 37MPH
3rd - 52MPH
4th - 66MPH
5th - 80MPH
6th - (You'll have to check your manual as I don't have that capability)

Avoid fast starts at wide open throttle an drive slowly until the engine has warmed up.

This is not to say that you will not adhere to this break-in procedure or you have to, but it was something that concerned me and made me opt on trailering the bike home.

As long as you vary your speeds (definitely wouldn't use the cruise control), don't lug the engine in 5th or 6th, and make several stops along the way, this really shouldn't be a problem.

Jerry
These are all very good points. Unfortunately for me I was picking bike up in July, and time was against me (would have had to drive back on I95 from NC to Va), which would have been hard for me to adhere to break-in procedures. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Rhino, don't mean to belabor the obvious here; but check the vest.  They're not all the same.  Just make sure the bike has a plug that matches it or that an adaptor plug is available to mate the vest to the lighter plug.

Thanks Guys,

You all have good points, can't wait to get on the road.  This is my 2nd brand spanking new outta the box new bike in 9 years. So I plan on just a little babyin, for the first day anyway... I will be looking for 2 lane roads, probably in traffic, and as cold as it is, probably stop a couple of times even before I hit 50 miles. I'll let it cool and let me warm.

I don't plan on hitting any interstates on the way back either.  1. Wind Chill   2.  Wind Chill.
3. No good BBQ Joints.

I have done quite a few LDistance rides 2K+ in the past, only one time did I hit freezing rain. That was not fun, not enough warm layers on that trip.  I would trailer home if it was really really cold, but I hope not to run into ambients under 40 while riding.

I got the Helmet
I got the home made turtleneckthing
I got the face tube
I got the longjohns & the T's
Let's see,  gloves with fingers, no holes in socks, long pants, windbreaker, rainsuit, and assorted things one should not take through airport baggage.  Yup, I am READY!!

Rhino

Frankly, I look at this as one very important mission. Getting back home and bringing the bike in for the 1K service. Need to play around w pipes and such, becasue there is no such thing as a stock bike in my OCD vocabulary.  (Shhh dont tell momma)

Rhino, where in NC did you get the bike? I live in Beaufort, SC between ~ exits 33 & 8 off I95. If you need anything along the way let me know. AJ

Thanks everyone,

I am landing in Raleigh, and finding my way to Burlington, NC midday Thursday to see my ride for the first time.  Our gal Terry said she would have everything ready to go, but I may not be in such a hurry to leave, might stay and visit for an overnight at a local watering hole/motel next door.

Yes, yes, the camera. Need the camera on the list.
And now I need to make up a route home.  I am two lane only during break in, if I get a chance to post the route I will, but I never make a regular ride-plan, only flightplans. I gues a broad -pointed south- is a good start.

Rhino,
Picked mine up Saturday, rode the 90 miles to get home and left for Maggie Valley via St. Louis Sunday morning.  The first 50 miles is the slowest, once you're past that, the 6 speed allows for ANY cruising you want to do.  3500 rpm in 6th is up near 90mph.  I never felt like I was slowed down by the break in, once past the 50 mile mark.  Just vary your engine speed some. I used 5th and 6th to help.  There's not much in the way of paperwork anymore, so you shouldn't have much to worry about there.  One of the plastic protectors will hold your papers without allowing them to get messed up.  For your flight in, use a piece of luggage that packs very small, remember you'll have the CVO cover to get home as well as anything else you may get.  Congrats on your new ride!! Have a safe one!

agree with above -- I had to ride home from dealership.

cool it under 50 miles..

no above 4000k under 500 miles -- no constant speed ( no cruise control)

500+ ride it like you stole it.

Be thankful that you get to break it in in cold temps....

All good advice but the first thing I would do before I left the dealer would be to get the syn3 out of the bike.
