How is the best way to tell the difference when looking at used lower fairings between RG and SG?

The new lower fairing are the same and have adjustable vents.  The older RoadGlide fairings are not adjustable and only fit the RoadGlide.

in addition, the older batwing fairings had a longer crash tube cover on them.  those will fit the 2010 and up roadglides, but the length of the crash bar cover will need to be cut off with a hacksaw.
