Letter and gift card from local dealer
« on: January 20, 2014, 08:06:19 PM »

Purchased my 14 Limited from a dealer about 2 hours away. Closest dealer is known for over charging when ever possible. In 06 when I was looking for a CUSE, they wanted 6K over MSRP.  In 03, I had purchased an 03 EG Standard from an individual. Went to this dealer with a 4K order and asked for a 10% discount to spend my money local and they proudly said " we don't do discounts."  So I have mostly taken my money elsewhere. Recently talked to a guy who bought a FLXH there and told me what he paid which was more than my Limited. So today, four months after buying the bike, this dealer sends me a 25$ gift card asking why I bought out of my territory. Reply card only has 3 lines to explain. Think I'll just give him my ph #. Does HD normally track bikes bought out of territory ?

Write the reply you just wrote and include the gift card with the response.

OR,  spend the time typing out a letter and spending the money on a stamp. Mail the card back with the letter and put "see attached" on the comment card. Keep the gift card even if you don't use it, they may think you'll eventually come back to the store to use it giving them at least a chance to try to sell you something. It might leave just a little doubt in their mind then. Always keep'em guessing.

You can always give the gift card to your buddy as a "new bike present" too.

Harley may not keep track but the dealer may subscribe to a "cross sale report" which uses title application information to tell dealers who in their area registered a new vehicle and what dealer it was purchased at.

Drop the questionnaire off in person and spend the $25 on some S100

Personally I would not bother. If they try to screw their customers with asking thousands over MSRP I would not want to do business with them anyway.

I would toss it or give it to someone else but I would not set my fot in that dealership.

Keep the gift card and write a letter explaining your disappointment with their sales pricing, lack of discounts, etc.  Explain there are other dealers with a more competitive edge.

Spend it and call it 'inconvenience pay'.

From the sounds of it the $25.00 card would only get you $10.00 worth of chit.  I would return to sender.

All good ideas. I did notice that the first name of the owner is different than I remember. Could be a relative or son and maybe he's trying to change some things. I'll keep the $$ though as I do go by there at times if I need an o-ring or maybe a filter.

As an owner: Call/write your lost customer and congratulate him on his new ride, tell him to ride safe and ask how you can earn his future business. Leave your cell and email.

If you're smart and responsible you already know why you lost the deal. Sometimes it's just hard to admit it to yourself.

Keep the money. Buy a filter or something like you said.

Give the card to a legit non-profit for use in their poker run or such. Write off the $25 and do some charity some good.
