Opinions from some much smarter people than me on PC V
« on: February 01, 2014, 07:38:25 AM »

Back in fall I bought a 12 ultra CVO that the original owner had put Rhineharts on.  I took it to my local guy to have him change out header pipes and tune.  He put on the VH dresser duals and  power commander 5 which he been installing them for quite awhile.  Well bike ran great but after about 400 miles bike started just cutting off.  It would refire and you could ride it for another few miles till it would do it again.  So took it back to him, I thought it had to be in PC he had same cutting off issues he even took it off to see if it still did it and says that it still did.  So being under warranty he suggested it must be something else electrical and take to harley.  Thats what I did, they just kept saying bike runs terrible and you need a tuner on it( indie took PC off before I took it down there.  So brought it home indie put tuner back on and took to different harley dealer farther away but he dealt with them and even rode it up there.  When I went and picked it up they said that connectors was bad and they recommended taking it off (and they did for me)and using a SERT.  Well since I had already had time and money in with Indie I just rode it home with no issues other than it didn't run that great (due to no tune) but it didn't once cut off even after 90 miles.  So indie calls PC and they tell him they did have some issues with the connectors and to really make sure its tight.  He does this and I've ridden it maybe 300 miles I haven't had any issues.
So long story but I'm planning on some trips out west with some buddies this year and I realize its a harley so anything can go wrong but knock on wood I've never been stranded.  I guess I've lost some faith in the PC and after seeing that its just velcroed to the top of the battery due to no room to slide down between tank and battery.  I'm wondering if I'm going to have the same issues some where down the road.  Hate spend another 600 or 700 dollars for another tuner.  I'm want the bike to be dependable more than anything.  I'm not going to race anybody on this bike so not worried about miking evey HP out of it and probably won't do anymore performance things to it.
Am I worried about nothing if its running good now?  Or is this an inevitable problem waiting to happen.

Thanks for any advice or opinions

Sounds like the connector was the problem. For PC to say they had been having connector problems and not did anything is pretty shoddy. At least send out a notice to all the Indy dealers!!

I know of two folks who had problems with PCs that malfunctioned - not connector issues. This was several years ago. I guess anything electrical and electronic can malfunction. With a piggyback device like PC it can make diagnosis difficult. Just one of the many reasons I do not care for them.

Actually diagnostics are usually easier with a piggyback device, since you can just disconnect it and see if the problem goes away.  The problem in this case however is probably related to the damage that was done to the stock connector by the pins in the PC connector.  In a case like that, removing the PC still leaves the damaged sockets in the stock connector and you may still have connection problems.

I have no direct knowledge or experience with the later versions of the PC, but I have read more than one account about this problem that claimed the issue was that the pins in the PC connector were not round like stock, but more of a triangular cross section and they distorted and expanded the female sockets in the bike connector.  It's something to check out, and if in fact the bike connector is damaged you may want to have a chat with the folks at Power Commander about having them pay to replace that connector and the PC.  Like I said, I have no direct personal proof of this, I'm just passing along information I came across elsewhere.

Agree with that - if it is a 'hard' failure.  Unfortunately it seems in all my experience with electronics that the problems are intermittent and riding a modified bike very far without the tune the piggyback device provides may not be an option.  That was the case in the two instances I am familiar with.
