Helmets as Carry-ons or checked lugggage?
« on: February 07, 2014, 08:15:49 PM »

Aloha all...

This Island boy is coming to the "States" for his first long ride... (about 850 round trip)

I will be travelling with friends...

Question is when flying, can a full face helmet be considered checked luggage? (we should be travellig pretty light except jacket, and other gear.

Possibly. Check with your airline on the size of a carry on. If it fits under the seat your good but they have dimension for max size.

Having the unfortunate undertaking of having to fly commercial regularly, I'd never check my helmet as checked luggage unless it was in a protective hard case or suitcase.  But yes, it can be checked luggage, but the airline will charge you the checked luggage fee of $25.  Depending on the aircraft, your helmet may fit in the overhead compartment.  I doubt if it will fit under the seats.

Fortunately its a direct flight from Honolulu to Las Vegas and its a local carrier...

I'm thinking it'll fit under the seat... (I shipped them last time we travelled interisland but they were shipped with the bikes)

Looks like I'm leaving my laptop and camera at home this trip and will be using the tablets and phones to take pics. (and a go pro)

We'll be renting an ultra since I'm riding two-up for this adventure.

I have a Scala-Rider comm system I got as a gift a year ago.. good to try this time around...

I've read other forums when travelling light they carry just a backpack and the helmet (and wear the jacket <has liner> pants and boots. we'll have a little more space that way.

Initially I thought about using the saddlebag luggage as carry-ons.

Hey Island Boy,

I have flown many times and carried my helmet on the plane. It fits overhead no problem. What's your route? Are you coming to LA?

Ditto, recently flew with it and my small duffle bag as carry on.  Both fit up top in the bins.

Hi Mark,

We are flying direct into LV using Hawaiian Airlines as LV is considerd the "ninth island".

The saddlebag luggage is probably a good idea then... (Although odd shaped)

You can always UPS the gear. I am going to CA for four days of off road riding in March and I am shipping my gear out a day ahead.

Interesting suggestion... however shipping in/out of the islands isnt cheap... I think I'd rather wear the jacket and stuff the helmet in the overhead bin...

we go straight from the airport to pick up our rentals and we are GONE.... (thats the plan anyway)
