54's It Is.........
« on: February 17, 2014, 05:55:11 PM »

After Christmas and setting a kid up to live in Calgary, finally back on point with goofing around on my Dogfish build. Lots of little things along the way, but finally ordered the 54's, the .30 thou head gasket and map from Steve.... Already sporting his X-Pipe, 2" or 2.25SD cores depending on my mood and TTS of course.
March 14th have the dyno booked, hope I can come close to graph on Fullsac's site  :bananarock:

So here is the sheet from my near stock '12 110". Fullsac X-Pipe, 2.25 SD baffles and a TTS with their map..... The 54's are in, buttoned up tomorrow and on the dyno the next with their new map and see if we can tweak the tune any better, hoping for some nice gains.

Looking forward to seeing the sheet Dirk!  It'll be interesting to compare the 54s to the 57s.

X2.  I'm really interested to see how this shakes out too.

05Train, I'm really interested to see how your build turns out too.  Hopefully I'll have a dyno sheet of my own to share soon.  I ended up going with the 57H, .030 gaskets, and S&S lifters.  Really thought about the HPI throttle body, but just couldn't talk myself into it, this winter anyway.

Can't wait to see both you're charts!

I have been watching the progress of both your bike and 05trains bike. Can't wait see to your numbers and see the difference between two cams.

So far I am very happy with the Andrews 54H cams.

I too will wait till next winter for the HPI 55 throttle body. If I am correct, I think 05train went with the HPI 55. I really like to see the difference between your and trains bike as they are ALMOST the same build.

Keep us posted!

Yes indeed, I went with the HPI 55.  I'll be heading north in a few hours to finish the tune, and hopefully have a chart posted by Sunday.

I had 57's and then 54's in my 103" and the difference in hp/tq was less than 1% in other words almost the same. The big difference was the noise in the TBW. 57's sounded like a rattle can of spray paint at idle and again at 2200rpm. Some say it is reversion noise coming back out the TBW throttle body. 54s are still noisy but not nearly as bad. Nature of the beast on TBW bikes. Cable throttle and you will be OK noise wise.

I just had Andrew 54s installed with .030 head gasket, Fullsac x pipe, TTS, Hi Flow A/C, Rinehart slip ons for a bit more noise, I had 2.25 Fullsac cores on but wanted more noise, this is the Dyno from yesterday, the numbers look good 105.09 hp and 114.70 torque, not sure about the curve, haven't got the bike back yet to ride, waiting for the backordered Yaffe 12" Monkey bars to show up. How does this compare to other similar builds?

There is at least 5/5 left on the table. Looks pretty good but still needs some work down low to get rid of the dip or start the run at higher rpm.  Could be the mufflers but I'm guessing fuel and timing are not optimized at the top. Were heads cleaned up while they were off? If not they should have been as that may be the choke point. If it feels good and you like the manners then that's all that matters.

I agree with you, I'm not real confident in the shop that did the tune, I took it in for some warranty work, Had a exhaust stud broke so I thought it would be a good time to install cams, I haven't rode it yet as its still in the shop waiting for back ordered Monkey bars to be installed, Theres a very well known tuner over at Latus Harley,Mike Stegman, that I think I will make an appointment with

You will like Mike, he is a very mellow guy and usually you can make a consult apt with him first to talk over what you want to do. I have used him for years even back when he had his own shop before George Latus brought him aboard. He has a group of techs that work under him but I always try and ask for Mike only to do work on my bike. Teresa who usually schedules apts is his wife just so you know ahead of time.

Mine is waiting for its turn on the dyno..... With the Fullsac supplied map, it seems to be not quite right off idle, but by all accounts pulls and behaves great above 2K. I'm 3 thousand miles away back at work for a bit, so I can't say first hand for myself. I may email Steve and get his take on whether the map needs generally needs tweaking and see what the dyno operator has to say..... Heading down for AZ bike week at the start of April for a couple weeks of riding (on a rental) so they have some time to get it sorted...

I'm looking forward to seeing your dyno, I ask them to give me a baseline with the map from Steve but the didn't, also the dyno tune they did seems to take a dive at the hit of the throttle, I'm no dyno tune expert but I was expecting it to be smoother on paper, I will see when I get it back and ride it, Arizona sounds good!!

Better late than never.....  Finally got down to getting a tune after work & family commitments blah blah..
The one pic at a time thing, so a couple more posts to follow  :drink:
The first VE table is after the local Harley shop did their thing, the archaic TTS I was told was the hold back....
