With respect to Mr. Train, I stated no misconception, common or otherwise. I did not say that the Harley warranty must cover aftermarket parts. I did say and it is true that aftermarket parts or modifications do not void your warranty unless they cause the failure for which the customer claims is under warranty.

Example: You add a Stage 1 kit with A/C, tune and pipes.  Later, your transmission fails.  Unless Harley can prove that the "massive power gains" from your Stage 1 kit caused the failure, they must repair the transmission.  If your heated grips fail, of course you still have your warranty.  Also of course, your initial HD warranty does not cover parts added after your purchase.  How could it?
"Mr. Train"......I like it.... :2vrolijk_21:

Here's the unfortunate reality though.  You've got a Stage 1 and your transmission blows up.  Harley refuses the claim due to a combination of "not legal for street use" parts and "increased power above design threshold".  Unless you want to hire a lawyer and fight them, you're paying to have your bike fixed.  Even if you do hire a lawyer, what do you think the chance is of them not having a better lawyer?

The same old arguments have been going on for years and it's not going to change anytime soon. HD sells smog legal parts that increase the power output well above stock so your new limit has to be less than or equal to what there parts put out. Is there a risk? you bet, but livings a risk too. The ESP warranty is an outside insurance company looking to take your money and not provide any service, that's there business model. So if you are going to do anything other than ride the bike 'as is' IMHO don't waste your money on one.

IMHO what it really all boils down to is this.  If you are really that worried about major failures, and a major repair would put a major crimp in your family budget, then perhaps you should either buy a much more reliable product or leave the Harley stock and hope H-D doesn't still try to screw you around on warranty issues.  Trust me, they screw many people around on stuff that has nothing to do with customer modifications at all.  Things like defective chrome and paint come to mind, as well as those mechanical things that they claim are "normal" but are in fact not acceptable.

As for the ESP, I've stated my opinion many times in the past but the short version is forget it, put the money in a safe investment instead, and if you do have a repair or two come up after the factory warranty then use that invested money to make the repair.  If you get lucky and have no repairs, you still have all the money plus any investment returns.  On the other side of the equation, if you pay nearly two grand for an ESP and don't have at least two grand worth of repairs, the ESP folks have that money in their pocket and you'll be out two grand for nothing.

I've not done the ESP but with a Limited with a Stage 1 using the PV I've found this varies substancially by dealer.  One dealer you go into with a problem and he discovers it has a downloaded tune he does not want to touch it.  Another dealer I frequent sort of expects customers to do minor things and does not make a big deal out of it.  I go there now for any maintenance needs.  I'm sure something like a Stage 4 and you damage the drive train they both would not cover it.  Sounds like the ESP is a bit stricter but I can't imagine anyone not covering a warranty due to a muffler change.  Guess it happens.

thought i would put in my 2 cents on this great subject.  I have purchased an extended warranty (this is my second one) on two modified bikes.  Bike #1 was a 2010 Street Glide with a big bore kit, cams etc that was dyno tuned.  I had several factory and extended warranty claims and I NEVER had a problem, the bike had a SERT, and several of the items listed on this thread as warranty void reasons.  I am certainly not going to tell you that you will not have a problem, but I will tell you that I did not have a problem.  Now, I do all of my purchasing and repairs at my selling dealer and have purchased 4 bikes from them.  I tend to think the warranties are paid on part on how the dealer presents the case.  If your dealer is looking for a way to damage customer relationship and ruin his aftermarket parts and service departments then he will probably look for way to deny claims.  Now if a rider is coming in with some heavily modified race bike and the work was done by an indie or by himself and the work was not done properly the owner cannot expect harley to fix their mistake.  Most dealers do their upgrades prior to delivery so i tend to think this is not the buyer's fault and must be fixed....on my previous bike i chose to have the upgraded engine, had harley do the upgrade and never had an issue on at least 6 or 7 warranty claims.  Please dont rely on my experience, buy/service your bike and parts from a reputable dealer, build a good relationship with the service manager and be reasonable....chances are things will go your way.

p.s.  I am a big fan of the extended warranty...especially on these computerized bikes.  In my experienced they have paid off.  Its insurance hopefully you will not needed but if you do you will be glad you have it.....these plans pay off if you put lots of miles on your bike....I was certainly glad i had it the times the plan paid for repairs that exceeded the price i paid for the plan.
