The two items Harley upgraded in production CVO110's back in 2013 were the lifters and the inner cam bearings.  Both were known to fail, and both tend to make a real mess of the engine when they fail.  So if you aren't one of those folks who always breeze through life without bad stuff happening, you might want to think about doing both.

Jerry

so are there enough folks out there with 2013's to say one way or another that the 'upgrades' were successful?  y'all got me worrying  :nervous:

Ref. the adjustable pushrods, I went round and round on this.  If I were doing the wrenching myself I might go with adjustables simply because of the time / ease of installation.  But I personally know two folks who've had problems with them - locking nut backing off and 'self adjusting' - not good.  Don't recall which brand of adjustables they were.  Also I personally don't like adding weight / mass to an already overtaxed valve train.  No scientific data here just my gut reaction and may be completely wrong.

But since I had my favorite tech at the dealership install my S&S premium lifters I took his recommendation and used the stock H-D pushrods.  His reasoning coincided with mine and as he pointed out the adjustables are not cheap and the difference in price just about paid for the additional labor / parts to get to it from the top end through the rocker box.

For $110 more then the Gatermans you can get the S&S with only one feed hole to the plunger and no feed to the cam roller.

Hard to read you.. You post up things that seem to be the most basic 101 questions then you post up things that make you look like you really have solid years of hands on.. Trying to figure this out..  Nothing meant by it

On lifters there is no reason to have an extra feed hole or direction feed hole if these was really needed we would have seen this for the cars long ago. Look at the less than stellar oil feed in a LT1 or TP SBC and it has 8 lifters to go through before it gets to the last two front lifters no issues there what so ever.  Look at the area it gets oil from .

^^ was thinking exact same thing. Not judging, all my questions are of the 101 variety, just curious.

That Sucks. What's the holdup? You said that the ESP inspector got out there right away, the Service Manager should have a timeline for your repairs. Did the SM tell you what all that ESP approved?
Just out of curiosity, how far do you live from Tallahassee?

650 miles
The service mgr is doing everything he is required to do. I think the holdup is process and availability. Will know tomorrow for sure

Well I would hope that in the repair they are going to remove the oil pan and clean pan and underside of trans case. FYI type deal.  It would seem that it simple but we have seen several engines that where done under warranty and the dealer never cleaned out the  metal particles in the pan.

My 255's in my 110 never made any noise but I can say for sure the Jim's lifters are very noisy.

Hi Rooster,

We both know about stuck exhaust valves, a gift we both share from a common head porting company which could not keep the valve stem seals in place.  Breaks rocker support plates too.

Bike30 was right on point with his reply "Sticking valve guides (typically exhaust) in aircraft engines can cause cam and lifter failure via increased loading via friction from oil and exhaust deposits"

I bought mine on a Friday & replaced all the valve train components by Monday morning. I've got over 30K on it & (knock on wood) not a issue one!

I replaced the oil cooler on my'12 because of concern it could not be properly cleaned.  My dime, moco would not authorize but I figured it was cheap insurance for the new engine.  Talked to the tech and am confident he properly cleaned the oil pan.
