On November 23rd 2011 my 2012 Hot Citrus SESG was delivered to my home. The sales person informed me during the document signing process that I could purchase a ESP for a considerable amount of money at that time or anytime during the factory warranty. I chose to not be a willing participant in any ESP because it seems to me that the customer, you & I, pay these people to tell us what we can do with & to an already very expensive product & then if there is a problem with the product, we are expected to smooch their rears & beg them to provide a service that I would have already paid them for in full, up front. The ESP provider should be difficult with the MOCO for not engineering & building a better product, not the purchaser of the actual problematic product.
The other issue that kept me from participating in a ESP is that if there were to be any stock parts failure, it is well known that the ESP will only replace deficient stock parts with more deficient stock parts, from a common sense standpoint this is unacceptable & I couldn't bring myself to drink the ESP's Kool-aid, I've already drank too much of the MOCO's. I love my bike & would not trade it for anything but I'll take the $ I didn't spend on a ESP & spend it on the bike & handle things myself.

IMHO you did the right thing.  The worst thing that could happen would be an engine failure like the one that's the subject of this thread.  You can buy a complete new 110 crate engine for less than $5k, or you could have handed over $2k to the ESP folks only to be told they will "rebuild" your blown engine at the lowest possible cost to them with labor supplied by some guy in a dealership trying to beat the lousy flat rate labor price set by the ESP folks.  To me it's a no-brainer.  I would pay extra every time for new versus a rebuild by folks with an incentive to cut corners to save a buck.

True, but most dealers and indys will allow you to pay the extra to have everything done correctly. Yes you paid $2k for the ESP and an additional $2k for doing things right bringing you equal to the $4k you would have spent on a decent rebuild anyway, but meanwhile the ESP will have covered all the replacements of compensators, starter clutches, heated grips, ring gears, radios, inner primary bearings, etc..
In my case, and not including warrantee issues, ESP paid for 2 starter clutches, 2 inner primary bearings, 2 compensators, 1primary chain, 1 clutch hub, 1 radio, heated grips, 1 base "gasket, 1 shifter shaft seal, probably some I forgot and all separate claims.  Although $50 a claim, I tried to have Other upgrades done simultaneously as labor was "free"

Update

Esp has approved a rebuild inclusive of a new crank and cases

Question:  do you have an aftermarket exhaust and/or ECM tuner on your bike?

ESP works in strange and mysterious ways for sure.  When my '07 110 crapped totally out I thought (and my dealer did also) that ESP would go the rebuild route.  But I wanted to go with a reman and the dealer supported that also.

When ESP put the pencil to it they determined it was more cost effective to go with the moco reman program as it would be less expensive than paying for all the individual parts and the dealer's labor to build.  Since my crank and cases were toast there was really nothing to 'reman' and I got a brand new motor through the reman program.

ADDED - the 'reman' motor also came with a true 1 year warranty since it was through the moco.

Like trapperdog I too have (unfortunately) gotten way more than my money's worth from ESPs over the years.  If you put many miles on your motorcycle I really think the ESP is a worthwhile investment / expense - whatever you want to call it.

bike is to be ready tomorrow the 4th.  so almost a month being repaired.  since i am working out of town, i can not pick up until the 12th.  So, it will be a month since the event.  The dealer has been very through and has done a good job dealing with ESP and my consistant inquires.

Now will see what the bike is like once i pick it up. I am expecting everything to be good.

I will follow the motto, Trust but verify....

i'm curious as to the answer of 1abastarsmda's question as well, 'do you have aftermarket exhaust and/or a tuner on the bike?'

would like to know how in-depth the esp folks went, were they searching for a way to get out of paying, or was it up front and painless (relatively speaking)?

Hehehe,  I think with most dealers, a more sound policy is "Never trust and always verify."   :huepfenlol2:

No CVO here but a 2 months ago a lifter on my 09 RG went bad and took out cam plate support and oil pump assembly.  I paid $50, ESP covered all parts and I have had a SE Pro tuner on it for 3.5 yrs and do my own SmartTuning.  Never even a question from the dealer or ESP about my stage 1 mods, which I installed.

the process with ESP was handled by the dealer.  I was present however i was informed by the ESP representative that he was NOT under any circumstances allowed to talk with me or provide me a copy of any written report.

he took photos of all the parts and pieces, as well as the bike.  Therefore, anything on the bike was available for them to inspect.  The head pipe was reviewed, as well as the mufflers.

the decision on what to repair was determined by the ESP carrier.  I can only provide you a factual report of my experience and can not relate anything else.

it was nothing like upfront and painless.  If that was the case, i would have gotten the engine repaired a lot differently.

it was very painful and took too long & created needless hours of missed riding over the course of 4 weeks.  Then of course its a $33K bike that experienced catstrophic engine failure at 18K miles.  WTF is that???  The more you pay for the bike, the less reliable, makes no sense to me.

my 04 which i paid approx 14K for as a used police bike, now has 157K plus miles on it and never misses a damn beat.  Its been ridden all over the US, in rain, sleet, hail, heat, off road, freeway, high speed and low speed.
I have rebuilt the engine ONCE, from the crank up and its had the cylinders off twice, once to go 103, then to go 107. it uses NO oil and runs like a swiss watch consistantly producing over 120 ft lbs of torque.

the saying "they don't make em like they use too" applies to this situation.

once i get this CVO back from the dealer, if it does not run correctly it will find a new home.
