Mods before breaking?
« on: March 19, 2014, 11:34:56 AM »

Does it matter if I put exhaust, stage one and headers on the bike before the 1000 miles break in?

Performance wise, probably not.  Warranty wise...don't piss off your dealer!

If it's done right with a good tune, it won't hurt a thing.  However, before you get carried away you need to research the possible implications for your warranty and decide if you want to risk losing it before you know if the engine is going to hold together for more than the first hundred miles.  I'd suggest that anything you modify be easily returned to stock just in case.  In other words, keep the stock exhaust stored somewhere and do the tune with a system that allows you to put the ECM back to stock with no trace left behind.

I was going to put on a rush ceramic coated headers, rush 4 inch slash cut slip-ons, screamin' eagle pro super tuner and a screamin' eagle air box. So I'm lost as what to do about the warranty still I guess.

The SEPST from Harley is not one of the tuning packages that you can put back to stock without leaving a trace.  So that would be the first thing I'd recommend you change in your plan.  Look at the TTS MasterTune or Power Vision instead.  As for the SE air cleaner, I was under the impression the CVO already had a high flow air cleaner.  Double check to see what you have in case I'm wrong, but if the bike already has a high flow air cleaner you don't need to waste the money unless you just want to change for a different appearance.

OK, I went to the parts book and verified that the 2014 Limited CVO with 110 has the Ventilator high flow air cleaner.  The 2014 Limited with 103 does not.  Which bike do you have?

Have you talked to the dealer about doing the mods and how it will affect warranty? My local dealer stood behind my 7 year warranty as long as they did all the work. It was worth the extra money to pay him to do the work in my eyes. Make sure to get it in writing though! If you do it yourself be prepared to put it back to stock if a problem arises.

The service advisor said I would have no problem. It is hard for me to trust the dealer.

Verbal assurances and promises are worth less than the air the guy used while he was spouting his BS.  As deldago said, it needs to be in writing AND signed by a legal officer of the dealership, like the dealer himself, not some clown in parts or service.

When you press them to put it in writing and have the dealer sign it, most places will backtrack faster than a camper finding a bear in his tent.

I just got off the phone with my sales rep over. my bike comes in tomorrow, so I told him before I agree to purchasing the $3500 in accessories I would like to have that dealer put it in writing that they're going to back the warranty if I have them perform the work. So we will see what come of it.

Ok so to follow up with the letter. They would not give me the letter so I did not get the ESP. I wish the dealers would sack up and tell it how it is.

The dealer would never give you a letter like that, they follow HDs warranty policy.

I have never had a problem getting warranty work done and I always do all the pipes / headers / cams / programming before I pick up the MC.

I don't know how many HDs I had, 6-8,  but they all had to go back for warranty work one time or another, never an issue with my dealer.

Did you have a major engine failure?  The people who keep telling other people not to worry about it because their dealer always took care of them don't seem to consider the fact that the dealer doesn't have the last word, H-D does (or CNA in the case of the ESP).  And in the past several years H-D and CNA have been increasingly requiring prior inspection and approval for any major repairs.  Thus my admonition to people making mods that can affect the street legal status and warranty status of the bike to get the dealership pushing those mods to agree to cover the warranty (or ESP) if Harley refuses to do so.  It's always better to be safe than sorry.  Of course for those who are just doing this stuff on their own and not through a dealer, they shouldn't waste their time asking for a letter from the dealer.  But it still pays to be smart; make mods that can be returned to stock easily just in case.

The other alternative would have been to tell the dealership to forget that $3500 in mods they're pushing.  You can do that stuff anywhere, why give the money to people who won't stand behind their BS?
