Exhaust
« on: April 09, 2014, 11:23:42 PM »

I wanted to check and see if anyone has installed a Vance and Hines power duals on their limited. I did on mine. I then took it in for the 1000 mile service at the local HD dealer. I wanted them to put a super tuner and run it on their dyno. They called today and say they need to drill a hole in the exhaust to put a port in for the sensor on the dyno. Does this sound right? This has been going on for a week. Thanks Hutch

hrdtail78 did that to mine when I had him do cams and a TTS tuner. He drilled one hole in each header tube up close to the heads. He said this allowed him to properly read the air.

It's under the heat shield and if didn't tell me I would have never know. By the way he put a screw in the hole when he was done.

Bike runs really good!

Well it means they are aware that they need to see a wide band sensor to tune the open loop areas. Thats a great start!!! IF they do its better than most dealer tunes. With a canned map and a few laps around the area in smart tune and calling it good.

It would let me know that at least they cared about the quality of the tune. Hanging a sniffer in the back of the muffler don't cut it. In 2009 HD had the o2 ports up close to the heads for better readings. Don't know why they moved them back and have to use a algorithm to get the readings.

The pipe manufacturers could do the right thing and supply their pipes with both sets of bungs so tuners wouldn't have to drill holes.  I'm pretty sure I've seen that offered by at least one pipe company, and it's something I would recommend people look for when buying pipes.  It's much easier to add bungs and plugs during manufacture than it is to do it after the fact, and it shouldn't add much to the cost of the pipes.

Just an update. I did get my bike back from the dealer today. It had been at the dealership for 10 days for the 1000 mile service and to install the super tuner. I think this was the first time they had dealt with having to drill holes in the exhaust for the sensor. The horsepower numbers are 88.03 before the tune and 92.94 after. Torque was 96.29 before and 102.83 after. I'm not sure if this is the best but suits fine. They must have run it for quite some time as it had 103 miles on it since I dropped it off.
Thanks for the follow up posts. I wasn't sure what I was getting into and you guys reassured me. Hutch.

My Dragos pipe has a set of holes up by the cylinder heads for tuning. They supplied a plug for both. Glad you are happy with your results.

My pipes already had the extra Bungs (Rush Ceramic True Duals). My tuner put the wide band sensors in both pipes as well as a sniffer rod in each pipe and did the Dyno. He then put a SSD drive in the loop and had me ride the bike for a couple of hours, downloaded the data from the SSD and tweaked the V/E tables even further. She runs really fine, I gained 11 hp and 13 lbs TQ.
