I thought it was great.  He put more miles on that bike at 6 years old than some owners on here have on their bike!   :bananarock:

All the moms out there are freaking out for nothing. Kids ride dirt bikes, atv's, jet skies, down hill ski, water ski, drive go carts, play hockey, and ride deadly horses with not a mention from any one. This is a bunch of lefties getting there panties in a not. Dad should of left the helmets at home also.  Way to go.

I have no problem with this father-son event.  Would like to have seen protective attire and a slower rate of speed

This video could be me 30+ years ago. My uncle had an 81 sturgis and that is exactly what we did back then!!!! My daughter has been riding her own dirt bike since she was 7 and started by riding on the tank of a Honda duel sport I have. She would run everything including the clutch and I would shift. Always with a full face helmet boots and gear!!! She turns 16 soon and asked me when she was 12 if she could skip a drivers license and just get a motorcycle license!!! I say good for him but I would like to see a little more safety gear or at least jeans and a good jacket!!!

The experience-great...the lesson -stupid. Our GKids got their own dirt bikes at 2, but they have full MX gear. MX helmet and boots, chest, back and shoulder protecter, and elbow and shin/knee protectors. Teaching kids to ride at that speed with little protection on the street only teaches them lack of safety concerns before they are old enough to make the choice for themselves.
Although many of us had similar experiences in our youth, things were different then. Smoking wasn't considered unhealthy, driving drunk or while drinking wasn't a problem, no child restraints in vehicles, etc..
Give the kid a ride, but gear him up, don't let him steer, and go slower

Dfinitely jeans and jacket at a minimum. No problem with the riding.
I also remember riding in the back of the station wagon in the jump seats facing the back window and the riding in the bed of a pickup truck as a kid. No seat belts and we never stayed sitting down.

This is cool and good father son bonding....but lets be real.  Sending bad message by not gearing up....jacket, pants, boots....as adults....we make it our choice to ride stupid and take chances....but a six year old...does not.

Here's my take....when I was growing up, we rode in the back window of the car (plus only lap belts and no airbags), drank out of the garden hose, rode bicycles without helmets or pads, rode go-carts with little/no brakes and no helmet and generally had a great childhood.  I learned to drive from my dad in an old Ford Econoline pick-up with three on the tree around the backroads at home...I was 8.

and faded memories of standing up in the back looking over the top of the cab of a 36 Chevy stake side flat bed as it rolled down the road in the late 50s .  As the song goes....."those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end....".   :nixweiss:

When I see that photo now days, I think "man, I sure wish I owned that truck today!"

What's watching have to do with anything?
As a boy, my employers son was in the back of a pickup in a roll over 40 years ago. Head trauma patient that doesn't  have much of a life now.  It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

he was saying that if you didn't like it, don't watch the video.

as far as your employer's son, well, that sucks, but apparently, whoever was driving wasn't taking the additional risks into consideration and adjusting their driving accordingly.  thats why you take steps to mitigate risks.

The video doesn't show the ear to ear grin on the kids face. That is the feeling we all try to get back when we spin the wheels ourselves. Long pants to guard against pipe burns, that is the only add I can prescribe.

I was being sarcastic
Do you not see the irony in second statement?
Where is the mitigated risk in the video aside from the half helmet?

I have no problems with the guy letting the kid take the "reins".  At any significant speed, the kid couldn't have altered the direction to any significant degree.  It can't easily be done,  but it would damn sure be interesting to take the posted comments here and isolate them by "age". :confused5:

I'm somewhat convinced that the answer would be that the (older) the poster was,  the more inclined he/she would be to say.........Hey,  good for you,  a neat lesson learned by your kid.  While the younger respondents are gonna "hedge" toward........Oh,  he didn't have the kid armored up with a Kevlar vest and all the accessories and "What if".........such and such could have or might have happened.

Seems to me like the casual "drift" toward..............no one wins and no one loses, and if you think 5 + 7 = 14,  that's OK too,  we don't want to hurt your feelings either. :drink:

Two points:
Point one: Wow, what an avatar!!!!

Point two:
I completely agree with your math.

My brother, who is an avid skier (Whistler Double Black Diamond) says he is not crazy enough to ever ride a bike but he sees nothing wrong with this:

I heard this dad being interviewed on TV.  Riding is his life (he has legally changed his first name to Harley!), the kid is already riding dirt bikes, and there was no one else on that road. He obviously loves his kid and, knowing the kid's and his own skill level, he is comfortable with the risk. Why should we judge him harshly because his opinion of acceptable risk is different from ours?  :nixweiss:
