Do I have retune for high altitude?
« on: May 01, 2014, 02:25:49 AM »

May be a dumb question but I'm moving to Colorado and I'm wondering if I need to have my bike better tuned for the higher altitude? I have S&S power tune duals, SE air box, RC Component exhaust with 2.5 inch baffles and a SE super tuner.

If you live near seal level,, I'm pretty sure you should get it remapped. The higher elevations do make a difference.

OBB, I was sorta thinking the same thing...one of the benefits of having fuel injection?  Now if it were a carb, I'd say absolutely would have to rejet for the altitude but the fuelie should be good to go.... :nixweiss:

Jerry, chime in here on this one.... :)

You lucky dog! Can't wait to get out of this area.

I would think the ECM would compensate, I mean if I am taking a trip that goes through the mountains I don't have to stop and have my bike tuned? Just a thought.

My CVO Ultra spends half the year at sea level and half the year at 10,000+ feet elevation and I don't see a difference at all.  SJ Ron :)

It all depends on how it was tuned to start with. The ECM is smart enough to handle it but many tuners take the system and dumb it down by turning off the closed loop portion of the software. This is for 2007 and later bikes. Once this is done you have turned off the corrections. So while you still have fuel injection and it will measure things you've told it NOT to correct anything. If your bike is 2006 and down it did not come equipped with Closed loop.

With that said there are some exceptions to the above statements. If and ONLY if your ECM has MAP based VE tables some of the correction will still work if you turned the closed loop off. This is do to mother nature, as you go up in altitude the air pressure drops. At sea level you have about 100 kPa air pressure and as you go up in altitude that pressure goes lower. So if the bike has MAP based VE tables and the tuner tuned all the points it will follow along the programming but it will not correct.

So some may get away with no issues other will not.

Great explanation, thanks Steve. I know my bike was tuned to stay in open loop with the exception of cruising speeds (he took the data on my power vision to see where I was riding in). I have a trip to the smokies coming up, wondering now how she will respond?

I'm excited but I had a west coast trip planned to San Diego. Leaving next Tuesday and returning 18 days later, now that trip has been cut short. So that sucks.

That does put a damper on things.

Welcome from Colorado Springs...  If you will be near the Springs, consider the local HD service Dept for a tune.  They have done great by me on two 110" bikes over the last few years.
