tuning issues?
« on: May 03, 2014, 05:18:15 PM »

Hey y'all-new to the site and I'm really in need of some advice. I'm coming up goose eggs everywhere else I've turned, so I figured I'd try here.

I've got a 2010 Ultra with a stock 96" engine. Fullsac headers with 2.25" Fullsac mufflers, Power Commander V and Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake. I know the bike is still not tuned right due to the fact that it still pops like mad during decel and occassionly between shifts while throttling up. It also falls flat on it's face at 5000 rpm shifting from first to second and will not pick up until I let out of the throttle again. I just noticed last week that my O2 sensors aren't connected to the computer-the ends are loose behind the right side cover next to the battery. I've had this bike tuned three times already-twice by the same authorized Harley tech and once at my local dealership. I'm wanting to do some piston and camshaft swaps this winter, but right now I've got the current issues to deal with. Any insight as to how to best correct them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, fellas.

whoever you paid to tune it made it open loop - you know - like a 04 bike... except its a 10 bike - you could buy a 04 save a lot of cash and have it tuned by a real tuner and you would be way better off...

you are getting screwwwwwwwwwed buddy

find a real tuner and get it done right

by tuner - i don't mean device - i mean a brain / person / professional  / whatever you want to call them - high priest of horsepower, whatever.

unplugging the 02's on a 10 is really that dumb - no way to sugar coat it.

Unless you spring for the so-called "Auto Tune" add-on for the PC-V, it doesn't utilize the O2 sensors.  Earlier models use a sensor "optimizer" (eliminator) plugged into the sensor harnesses, the 2010 model just calls for disconnecting the harnesses like they did with yours.  Bad idea in my humble opinion to eliminate the sensors and revert to 100% open loop operation.

I'd suggest selling that PC-V on ebay, find a real fully qualified professional tuner, talk to him about doing a proper custom tune, and get his input on which real tuning device to use.  I'd suggest a flash tuning device that loads a new calibration (map) to your stock ECM and retains closed loop operation utilizing the O2 sensor input.  TTS MasterTune, Power Vision, SEPST, etc..

Most Harley dealerships seem to be the last place you should attempt to get a proper tune performed.  Just because the dealer bought the equipment doesn't mean he spent the bucks to hire and keep a fully qualified person to do the tuning.  There is a huge difference between a good tuner and a guy who just operates the dyno.  Any reasonably intelligent chimpanzee could be trained to just run the bike on the drum and create a chart.  It takes real smarts to do a proper tune.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm at a loss as how to find a "real" tuner. The first guy I used was "supposed" to be good but the second guy working at the local dealership was "supposed" to be "the guru" around here. Very well known and highly recommended tuner working with a very well known dealership here in the southeast. Needless to say I'm sick about it-over $1500 in a crap ECM and dyno fees alone-and a bike that won't run properly.

I'm at Thunder Beach Rally this week and they're really pushing Thundermax tuners-what can you tell me about them other than they're way expensive? I'm really leaning hard towards the TTS Mastertune. I know Steve at Fullsac recommends them with his kits.

Also, what can you tell me about Cycle Solutions. I watched Chris tune a bike in their mobile dyno trailer and was blown away by what he was able to do with a bike just like mine, only with a few more engine mods, but even more so by what he had to say to the guy who owned the bike. I was just really impressed with him. Thanks again for your input. Maybe I'll get this business figured out before next spring.

I recommend contacting Doc here on this site. He seems to be a highly recommended tuner here.

I called him and he suggested three tuners within a couple of hours from St. Louis. I used C & S in Allorton, IL and got a great tune.

Had him do cams, lifters, TTS tuner and a dyno tune. Bike never ran smoother! No pops, no stumbles, just a smooth lay down of power.

Take a little trip south to Doc and just have him fix you up, Orlando isn't all that far from you.
