JCZ track day in a Lambo....
« on: May 11, 2014, 01:36:33 PM »

Babe got me the ultimate birthday gift.....something I really, really liked.  A day at the track in a Lamborghini Gillardo LP550.

We drove up to Orange County on Friday and checked in to the Best Western.  Just like a little kid waiting for Christmas, I woke up several times in the night....thinking about it.  Many here have known me for years and know that I often forget I'm an old man and in my head I think I'm 20 yrs. old and end up hurt, broken bones, an ambulance ride, etc.  But.....this is something I've often fantasized about (come on, you know you have to!) and I was not going to hold back.

We arrived at the track....two hours early....didn't want to be late.  It was all good.  We were able to register right away, go out and see the cars....two different Lambos, two different Ferrari's, a Porsche Caymen and a Porsche S (the fastest 0-60 mph car there but we weren't drag racing and so I blew by him), an Audi R8 and what they explained as surprisingly the most requested car that they didn't have in their fleet (now have three of them), the Nissan GT R.  We were free to open, sit in, take photos, etc. of each of the cars unobstructed and at leisure.  That in itself was very nice.

For me, Babe picked what would have been my first pick, The Lamborghini Gillardo LP550....rear wheel drive at 550 h.p.  In this case it stands for both horse power and higher powered!  :P

Being early, we were able to watch the two groups that were registered in front of our 11:30 a.m. group.  Witnessed a couple of spin outs, one guy did two or three laps and came back to the pits, parked over at the side of the lot and stopped short....jumped out and ran over to the side to dump.  Not sure if it was the acceleration, nerves or what it was but to do that in front of everybody else.......needless to say, he didn't get back in the car. :nixweiss:  I guess it might not be for everyone.

You sit through a 15 min. class, then a track introduction ride in a Porsche Cayenne SUV (a couple of laps just to let you get the lay out, first hand).  Then the helmet and you're introduced to the professional driver that rides shotgun in each of the cars.  Interestingly, I met one from Australia, one from England, one from Germany and Tao (the guy that went with me) from France.  What.....Americans don't know how to drive? :nixweiss:

Then there was the guy that checks the tire pressure all day long....he's from London.  He also maintains the fleet.  They have a new Vette that they offer a ride along.....two laps for $99.  A professional driver drives, you ride shotgun and he's pretty much drifting the whole way but it's at high speeds of 80-110 mph.  That looked like it'd be a hell of a lot of fun, too.  The tire guy said he's constantly letting air out, all day long.  Then each morning he has to add air to each of the tires before he brings them out.

OK.....enough of this....it's my turn.....

Just not a lot of room for a guy that's 6'4" and 220 lbs...... :'(

A much better fit for somebody Babe's size.....

I will pass that green Porsche S that's way off in front of me, on the track....

another lap and much, much closer........

It happened on the backside, in a curve, no less and passed on the outside......some people should stay home.   :P

You're kidding me....it's over already?  :(

Now if you're curious about what this would be like....or if you just want a laugh of me at my first track day....they do offer a recording.  It relfects the track lay out and a little red icon that reflects where you're at on the track throughout the video, a camera pointed at the driver as well as a camera pointed out the front (from the driver's view).  It's 13 min. 30 sec. to view here (it has volumn and click on it to view in full screen).  It begins with Tao and I sitting in the car and he's giving me some final instruction before we pull out on to the track....

I forgot to mention.....Friday, as we were headed north on I-15 I noticed a van sitting on the side of the road and a small bit of smoke coming out from under it (no flame yet).  I normally carry a large ABC extinguisher in my tool box and so I pulled over.  I forgot that I needed room in the tool box during my move and so had placed the extinguisher and other large things in my storage.....but I did still have the road flares.

I walked back and flares out to at least gain one lane of clearance beside this van.  It's pretty amazing how people do not seem to have the most basic common sense when it comes to something like this.  Up until I put the flares out, they continued to drive in the lane right up beside this van that by now was in flames.

Nothing left for me to do but take pics..........

All in all, a great day, a great birthday and a great weekend.  Thank you Babe!  :2vrolijk_21:

Did a similar track experience at Walt Disney Speedway. Got to drive all four cars plus a ride along with Christian Fittipaldi in a Lambo. Great times. Thanks for sharing.

I've got several inquiries asking about the cost.  I meant to attach a link to their web site.  This particular company is located in Vegas and L.A.  For those of you wanting to drive all of their cars, scroll down to the bottom of this page for their multi car prices.  And all their classes or groups were booked for both Fri. & Sat. so get your reservation in early....

By the way, Babe booked mine through Cloud 9 Living....  http://www.cloud9living.com/?gclid=CNSGzYr_pL4CFYJqfgodPXQA6g

JCZ..... I'm so happy that your doing well and what a present!   I too have done this a few times in Vegas with the same company. It is such an awesome experience and I would say that if you have the money and are by one of these places, you have to do it.  Remember if you have done it before you get an extra lap for free  :2vrolijk_21:.  I did the GT-R x2 and a Porsche ? x1 I really want to try the Aventador 700. They tell me that I might not be comfortable seeing I'm 6'5" and 320.  I did love the GT-R and it was a blast to drive.

Purdy cool, JC.  Very nice of Babe to get that for your birthday.

Looked at this a couple times out on Vegas trips but haven't pulled the trigger as of yet.  After your review and video, may have to try this next time out  ;D
