SERT AND STOCK ECM
« on: December 03, 2006, 03:18:37 AM »

With all this stuff about ECM mods and Warranty's, would it make sense to install the SERT from your SERT CD and carry around a brand new, extra, stock ECM, and simply exchange it with your SERT modified ECM every time it goes to the dealer? Is the stock HD ECM expensive? Am I thinking about this too much? I had a revelation telling me that this makes sense. Does it? Hoist!

It does make sense>>> Just use a T-MAX instead of another HD ECM and swap back to your stock one when it goes to the Dealer>>>>Greg

If your engine blows, put the stock ECM and other parts back on the bike before hauling it off to the dealer.

Or get a dealer that installs the SERT and will cover your ass if something goes wrong.

While there seems to be some initial logic to the swapping the ECM idea I'm guessing there would be a fly in the ointment.  The thing probably logs hours.  So if the hours don't jive within an acceptable range with miles on the odometer they'll still know something is up.

Jerry,

Anyone making internal mods to their engine, other than approved Harley street legal big bore kits, has to be realistic enough to realize their powertrain warranty is kaput. Jerry

The other thing to remember is what about the mods that caused you to have to use the SERT/PC/T-Max to begin with?  What are you going to do, remove those items, too, every time you visit the dealer?  At a minimum you'll have some slip-ons and an open air cleaner.  If you don't swap that stuff out and then show up with a stock ECM, then they'll probably blame your problems on the fact that you didn't compensate for the mods. The The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C) states unless the use of an aftermarket part OR service can be directly related to the failure of the vehicle, then the warranty must be upheld.

Doing an air filter and slip-on mufflers, or doing a SERT tuning to accomodate these parts is highly unlikely to be the cause of engine failure, and if one occurred it could not be attributed to these products.
