Let us know what you end up with and why.  I'm currently debating the LCD vs Plasma issue now and haven't made my mind up yet.  I guess both have their strong and weak points.  Plasma has a glass front so you will get more glare off the screen.  Viewing angles are getting close now and the refresh rate on the LCD's is much improved and you get less shadowing now during high speed action such as sports.

I went thru the same thing last Xmas. In the end we bought a 42" Samsung LCD. We're extremely happy with it. Too bad there aren't more HD channels, though. The HD broadcasts are awesome. Hoist!

They are all so much better that what we had just a few years ago that you probably can't go wrong with any.  After lots of research I also went with the Sony WEGA 50".  Great TV.  I just bought it back in August and price has already come down significantly.  Bought thru Crutchfield but found a lower price thru some Sony authorized dealer in Chicagoland (just do internet search) and Crutchfield met their price.  They will only meet prices from authorized Sony dealers, not the myriad of electronics sellers you find on the web who operate under multiple names up in Brooklyn, NY, area.  Don't know if it is still available but Sony finance had no cash, no interest deal available and I don't have to pay one cent until Jan 31, 2008 (yes 2008, not 2007).  What a deal. From a shopping guide in our local newspaper:
Plasma- Boasting big,flat,lightweight screens,plasmas have a clear edge over LCD sets. Downsides- reflective screens (an issue in sunny rooms) and brightness, which can fade with use.
LCD- Flat, lightweight screens offer sharp images, rich color and attractive prices. Manufacturers insist current sets offer better off-center viewing and less blurring in action scenes than prior generations.
Projection- Boxy like traditional sets, yet thinner relative to their screen size, come in two flavors: (1) new lightweight microdisplays that use digital technologies and cost as much as flat screens (2) bulky, tube-based displays. Neither earns Best Picture honors.
Tube sets- Great picture quality, low prices and time tested technology, the old fashioned CRT (cathode-ray tube) remains a bargain, with many choices.
 My Sony is of the latter variety at 34". But boy is it heavy. It weighs about 200 lbs. and takes two people to move it.

Heres a pic of the 37" LCD in the toy rm. Also have 42" LG plasma in bedrm and 50" Panasonic plasma in entertainment rm. The LG has a better refresh rate and aslo can refresh its own screen if image gets burndt into it. As far as I know LG is the only on to do this. Both have outstanding picture in HD mode. The LCD is great for the toy rm because of the up and dowm temps.Were as plasma I have heard the fluxuating temps is hard on them.
