York, ME is the home of the Cape Neddick Light.  In 1874 Congress appropriated $15,000 to build a light station at the "Nubble" and in 1879 construction began. Cape Neddick Light Station was dedicated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service and put into use in 1879. It is still in use today.

The Cape Neddick Light stands on Nubble Island about 100 yards (91 m) off Cape Neddick Point. It is commonly known as "Nubble Light" or simply "the Nubble".

As I viewed the rocky shore line you get a sense of mystery and danger ships a night face without a sense of guidance.

The town center, the area in and around Dock Square, is located along the Kennebunk River, approximately 1 mile from the mouth of the river on the Atlantic Ocean. Historically a shipbuilding and fishing village, for well over a century the town has been a popular summer colony and seaside tourist destination.

Kennebunkport was also the summer home of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, father of former U.S. President George W. Bush.  There were no Bush sightings at the time of my visit.   ;)

Day Three | Ogunquit, ME - Bar Harbor, ME | 300 miles

Still on US Highway 1 and enjoyin’ the ride to Portland, ME for the Portland Head Light.  However little did I know that they would be running a race on this day that would take me right into the middle of it!  After a long series of stopping, starting and idling we made it to our destination.

The light station sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine.
