oil from air filter
« on: June 09, 2014, 04:50:43 PM »

I know probably been asked before. Is this normal: 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra, now with 12,000 miles. There is a drip of oil from the bottom of the air filter (mesh cover) onto top of timing chest. How bad does it have to be before it's a problem. :)

Has the air filter been serviced over those 12,000 miles?  If not, you need to remove the filter, clean it, clean the backing plate, and reinstall everything.  Small amounts of oil get carried over into the air cleaner from the breather system, and eventually it will saturate the bottom of the filter and start dripping.  This happens to varying degrees, some acceptable and some not.  If this is the first time you've noticed this in 12,000 miles, I'd guess you don't have a serious problem.  Btw, you should service the air filter every 5,000 miles.

I noticed mine doing it when I put too much oil in the tank. Should have added when it was hot oil. Put in cold an it will be over serviced when it heats up.
Just my 2 cents worth. That is if you fill to the full mark on the dip stick.

I had that happen quite a bit on the old Road King. Never was a real problem and got use tom it after many thousands of miles. When I had the top end rebuilt it quit. I think it was an oil seal ring issue. Maybe? :-\

 Is you engine modified?

No it's not modified. It is standard SE110 Used in the CVO Ultra Road Glides.

I had that problem.  Turns out my ring gaps were all aligned.   New pistons, rings, and cylinders courtesy of the Mothership.

I thought rings always turned. That is why they put a pin in the ring groove of a two stroke , so they won't turn an get caught in the ports. Some one tell me if I'm wrong.

can a worn gasket P#17162-03 breather  assembly, cause the oil issue in the air cleaner ...looks like a round thin rubber piece .... was wondering if that rubber deteriorated enough to become  soft  and not making a good seal to cause  oil mist passing into air cleaner
it comes with a gasket kit P#26858-99 and 63815-99 and gaskets

thanks Lever

They're called umbrella valves and yes, they can be the culprit as well as overfilling with oil as someone else stated. I prefer the Harley brand stamped steel umbrella valve breather assembly. I believe pn is 17025-03A. Drilling the two small holes in each of the rocker stands out a touch larger can help with the symptom as well.
