2007 CVO Utlra Classic hard starting with Master Tune
« on: June 12, 2014, 10:04:24 AM »

I have tuned my 2007 CVO Ultra Classic several times with the Vtune of the Master Tuner. The bike runs great but starts hard.
What I mean by that is the bike spins and spins over with an occasional snort and puf out the ACR, then will eventually start.
It does not really seem to be related to cold or warm startup. But more times than not it will cough through the Auto Compression
release then with more cranking will start. I am not sure how to "Tune" this startup issue. My 2003 Fat Boy has the an open loop
FI and it always starts with about 1/4 turn of the motor. Any help on tuning this startup? Thanks :nixweiss:

You need to get a little more data so we can try to help. Check and see if there are any codes to start with. Then check your fuel pressure. As just a wild guess you could try to increase the fuel at starting unless it smells like fuel when your cranking it over, then you can try to decrease it some. Another thing to try would be to twist the throttle open a small amount prior to trying to start. If this help then you most likely have an IAC setting issue which is common on your model.

How old is your compensator - how many miles?  Is it the original compensator?

If memory serves me, there were also some issues with the auto compression release wiring in that model year...as in wiring would get pinched or something to that effect.

But, I'm old and may not be remembering right... ;)

Thanks for the replies. There are no codes. How would I check the fuel pressure? I did have a fuel pressure regulator fail
a couple of years ago and then the bike would not start at all. I will try playing with the starting fuel.
It does have the original compensator. ::)

I'd strongly suggest replacing your compensator.  Good chance that's the cause of your hard starting problems.  Classic symptoms.  Do a site search and you'll find lots of similar stories of hard starting problems cured by replacing a worn out compensator...   :2vrolijk_21:

If you want to check your fuel pressure, you can rig up a setup with minimal hoses and fittings (and a gage of course).  Here's a photo of a setup I made a few years back...  You should have 55 to 60 psi...

My 07 started hard when warm, cranked a lot and would spit back thru a/c, added some cranking fuel in the warm temp areas, fixed it. I have an old race tuner on mine.
