HD 12V Saddlebag Port Has Power, But Won't Charge IPhone?
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:36:48 PM »

2011 Street Glide.

12V HD saddlebag power port, wired directly to the battery.

Getting a constant 12V (checked with meter), but this port won't charge my Iphone 4S.

Tried using different charging cords, but no luck.

I'm baffled, any ideas?

Thanks

Depends on what USB adapter you are using.  I have some cigarette USB adapters what won't change my iPhone.  I would try different ones and see if it works in the car.

I tried two different charging cords (1 w/LED).

They both work in my trucks cigarette lighter, and neither work with the HD charging port.

Thanks

Most times that an iPhone or apple device won't charge is caused by incorrect polarity at the charging/accessory port.

Just check to make sure positive is connected to the center terminal and the earth (negative) is connected to the outer cylinder/terminal.

Make sure the adapter is not vibrating out of the actual plug.  Mine works fine with ignition on and the engine not running. Then after a few miles of rough road and vibration it works its way out slightly and looses contact with the center conductor.  Try a single ziptie around the adapter so it cannot work its way out.

Does it work with other accessories plugged into it?

Does the cord/adapter with the LED stay lit?

I have some USB adapters that are very compact. They also have a lip to limit how deep they go into the socket. But the sockets are too deep so the adapter is plugged in but the center pin won't quite reach the bottom to make a connection. I have added a tiny screw in the plunger to make sure it reaches. Solved.

The cord with the LED lights up when plugged into the HD power port, but the IPhone still doesn't charge.

Have you tried charging via the cigarette light?

If the phone charges via the cigarette lighter but will not charge via the adapter in the tour pack then you need to check the actual voltage at the tour pack connector. You might have a loose connection on the power or ground wire that feeds the tour pack connector. 4 VDC will make the LED light come on but will not charge the phone. Check to see that you have at least 13VDC (battery voltage should be above 13VDC if the battery is good) at the connector. 12 VDC or less means you have a bad or discharged battery or a bad connection. If the voltage is low when the bike is not running but above 13 VDC when running you might want to invest in a good trickle charger or have the battery load checked.

Good luck

An additional possibility: If you happen to be using a SENA 12V to micro USB adapter, note that I learned the hard way that they are direct-wired, providing straight battery system voltage on the micro USB(!) (Yes, I proved this) If the set up you are using provides voltage above 5.5V, the protection circuitry in the phone will block it. I use a battery case on my iPhone and it has its own micro USB inlet to charge it and the phone. Neither the battery case OR the iPhone will work with the SENA's 14V cord.

I really think your issue will be resolved by using higher quality cables or adapters (Apple branded, maybe)

Both cables work when plugged into my trucks cigarette lighter.

Neither work when plugged into the HD saddlebag power port.

If that's the case and the USB adapter you are using has an LED that is on, then it MUST be a threshold voltage issue. Your system voltage is maybe not within the tolerance of the adapter's or the phone's specs. Does it start charging after the bike is running and the voltage picks up?
You've piqued my curiosity now, as I've been chasing accessory power issues myself lately.

Try plugging it in only after the bike's engine was already started and the throttle had been blipped once to make sure the charging system was energized?
