Cheaper options for shipping bikes
« on: June 20, 2014, 02:08:23 PM »

Has anyone done anything inventive to ship a group of bikes to a rally?   I have heard of folks renting a container and filling it with bikes, then having a shipper pick it up.  I know I can ship with a bike hauler to Sturgis for around $900.00, but if a bunch of friends got together and could save some money it might be worth it.

I just an't afford to take the 6 or 8 days to die round trip then spend a week there.

JM2C.  I'd feel good about using a biker shipper because they'd have a system in place to secure the bikes (skid, tie downs, padded straps, etc.) plus they'd be covered by insurance and they've done this before.  Putting bikes in a shipping container, having to develop some type tie down system, plus getting some type of insurance...seems like it might cost more than a bike shipper.

Have you asked some of the companies that ship bikes if they offer multi-bike discount(s). I would think if I was in that business and I could stop/pick up 6 bikes at one place versus making 6 separate stops it would be beneficial (cheaper) and some of that savings could be passed on to the customer(s). :nixweiss:

6-8 days round trip.  I live in Southeast MD, and figure 3 days one way with no weather.  I will be riding with some others we are all 60 or older and don't want to push it too hard.

There isn't much of a savings taking a group as opposed to just as many individuals. For me I'm turning bike's down as I don't have the room. A shipper is still the best way to go outside of riding. I could see issues with a container for the same reasons already mentioned. At one time I looked into taking a buds 53' truck on a trip and after I figured in the costs and what it would take to make it work it wasn't worth it.

I wonder how the expense would compare if you could rent a toy hauler and take several bikes out and camp in the hauler when you arrive splitting the cost?
