Laconia 2014
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:28:03 AM »

Started out to go to Laconia early Saturday (6/21) morning. What better way to celebrate the 1st official day of summer than a ride to Weir's Beach. Somewhere along the 80 miles from Upta Camp to Weirs I got to where if I saw one more guy on a Harley with obnoxiously loud pipes and a $10 cigar stuffed in his pie hole I decided it wasn't for me. I've turned the corner from life long lover of all things motorcycle to a crotchety old COBB with no use for these posers on their softails. So I turned LD around and headed back to camp. Had some breakfast and suffered through another round of stogie posers. Got home, did some work and at some point checked into Facebook. What do I find. Pictures of stogie posers. Someone once said something along the lines of " a woman is a woman but a good cigar is a smoke"  I doubt that person ever gave a thought to the fact that someday a cigar would be a fashion statement for wannbee bikers.

B B

PS  With apologies to anyone who smokes cigars because they like them and have been smoking them for many years

Didn't know that if someone acts in a way that don't suit me, that makes them a poser. Can't we all just get along?

People can act any way they choose and that's fine with me. As a matter of fact, one of the things that attracted me to the biker lifestyle about 45 or so years ago was the do your own thing aspect of it. But you see that's individuality. What I'm talking about here is a group of people who feel if they dress and act a certain way that makes them a particular thing. Like say me for instance. If I put on a baseball uniform and show up at a local Sr League with a nice new glove and spikes and spit sunflower seeds. Ain't no way that makes me a ball player. Just a poser in a uniform and I'd be the 1st to admit it. And that's my point. The whole thing with the softal with a certain kind of pipes and the $10 stogie and the extra loud attitude HA HA HA at the bar and all. That's being a poser if it's not who you are 24/7/365.  So sure I can get along. I can shut my mouth, turn my Harley pointing the other way and get along down the highway to someplace where the bikers are real.

Zeus Rooster. Dr Zeus and he is fine. He and I are Upta Camp in Maine. Mighty fine day on Sebago Lake today too. High 70's, bright sunshine, light breeze. The water is 73 degrees according to  touchscreen on the dash of my latest toy Miss Trudy - - a 10ftx26ft floating nightclub LOL Me and Mrs BB are in flux. We're selling the big house in Dago and don't know where the hell we're headed. I've actually been looking at RV's which if you recall, I swore an oath to Odin I'd never own hahahaha. All I know for sure is that when our baby grand daughter is old enough for school we will likely be within a 30-60 minute drive of Ananheim Heights CA.  That's roughly 3-1/2 to four years from now. In the interim I think we're gonna be vagabonds

You give Karen a big hug from me ok buddy ?

Now I gotcha, and you are correct. At first thought you were lumping them into a group.........you weren't, just picking out the posers. They ARE easy to spot!!!!

If Laconia wasn't enough for you. This weekend is the Maine State HOG Rally at OOB.
Should be a profitable Weekend for the OOB Leos. One of the places in the state where they actually ticket Loud Pipes. Heard they also have a "Automobile Only" Parking. Park you ride in those parking areas and get fined..

When Neal started this website (what 12 years ago ?) I doubt he really had any idea it would become what it has. I think he simply bought a Harley that he loved so much he wanted to share his experiences with others who had similar feelings. I came along sometime around fall of 2005 or thereabouts. It was the first website I ever joined and I had no clue as to rules and etiquette etc. I've never been into the whole Rodney King thing and pretty much speak my mind wherever I am so it was no surprise that I ruffled a few feathers even way back them. Fast forward to 2014 and I rarely if ever post anything. In fact I couldn't remember when I started this thread when the last time I did post was. I knew the site had changed in the 9 years since I'd first found it. No sense in going over THAT whole story. The one thing I did NOT expect though was the childish nature of a couple of posts on this thread here. You have no idea who I am or what my history is. And I do not see anywhere in my posts where I claim to be any particular thing in the biker world. I went out for a ride to Laconia. I've been doing that since 1969 or thereabouts. My first few times I did not even have a license and was a 16 year old kid on a Honda XL350. A lot has happened in between then and now and as I rode down Rt 25 thorugh Maine and into NH I couldn't help but notice that there was this group of bikers who appeared to have been cloned or something. Same bike, same pipes, same attitude, same stogie in their mouth etc etc. And in my opinion, they seemed to believe that part of their whole schtick was to act like they were badasses and not be friendly. The more of them I saw, the less I felt like seeing 100,000 of them. So I turned around, rode home and posted about it here on Neal's website. Since I don't notice the moderators locking down this thread or deleting my posts I assume I have broken no rules. But it appears that I have hit a nerve with a couple of people enough so that they felt the need to lob a dig in my direction. Why so ? Where did I claim to be Sonny Barger ? Please quote where I claimed to be a Real Biker (although you might actually want to do a litte homework on that)
So it's nice to see that now that the site has a gajillion members that it's become so PC that postin one's feelings in a general "when did this chit start " sort of way gets under people's skin so easily.

Spiderman, I am the last one who would ever be "PC". If I was I would have just blindly agreed with your post.

In a way, we are all posers. I enjoy many things. Such as golf, but I am a poser because I am not that good and I don't earn any money doing it. But I do have good clubs and dress appropriately and know the proper etiquette.

I also enjoy boating. I have a nice boat and all the proper equipment. But I am not a captain and earn no money from my boating. So here I am a poser as well

I also enjoy playing racquetball. I have good equipment and play a couple times a week. I look like a real player, but alas I am just a poser as it is something I enjoy only on occasion.

And the list can go on and on.

My point is, to each their own. So what if there was a group of guys getting together for a boys weekend at Laconia and having a good time in their own way? Just because someone else's way of enjoying themselves does not fit into your mold of what a "real biker" should be, who cares? If you have been riding a bike for 30 years and someone else for 2 years, does that make you better than them? If you have been on this site for 12 years and someone else for 2 years, are your posts more valid because you have been here longer?

As far as internet forums go, I see so many people posting things behind the security of their computer screen and their relative anonymity. Some people become more emboldened than they would normally be when face to face. So when I see people post how tough they are, or better they are, or not having tolerance for others then I like to point some things out. We were ALL newbies or unexperienced at one point or another in our life. For those of us with experience it's our job to help guide the newbies along. I love this site because it's taught me so much about Harleys that would have taken me many years to figure out. So my learning curve has been dramatically shortened and has saved me much money and many headaches. And this forum has very little drama, it's mostly just straightforward facts, especially when compared to many of the other internet forums that are nothing but drama and BS

I do love a good cigar, once in a while when I can. I can't smoke at work or at home as my wife detests it. But if I go out for a boys weekend, yeah I might have a cigar or two. Am I a biker poser? You betcha, but I don't care. I enjoy riding my bike and will do it my way for as long as I can. If that offends you, then so be it. But isn't that also part of the freedom and independence of this country and riding Harleys? To be able to enjoy those things in your own way?

Let's make sure we get one thing clear. I've been smoking good cigars for years and nobody rides a motorcycle and smokes a good cigar at the same time. At $10-$20 for a good stick who would waste one while riding. Maybe a $2 green 7/11 cigar that you can chew on but not a good one! Who knows maybe someone was giving them away at the rally. I thinks its funny myself.

Good post DR!

What you said below I want to comment on.

I'm with you 100% on that. No one pays our bills. We are not bothering anyone. In my little corner of life it's just a moment of humor to think anyone cares enough what I ride or how I look when I ride or the fact that I don't fit their perception. I ride because I love it, my wife loves it and we both share that passion together and what better way to meet good people and see great sites.

And it's a small moment for sure!
