Lost all low end power on yesterdays ride...
« on: June 23, 2014, 11:11:14 AM »

Hey all,

So I went on a ride yesteday on my CVO Ultra, it's an 07 that has already has the engine fix done to it. Everything was fine up until the way back, and about 200 miles from home. I had about 3/4 tank and I topped it off where I had previously fueled up on the way up. I made it about 30 miles down the road, and realized that I was losing all my low end power. By that I mean that if I let the rpm's drop below 3k, it would just sputter out and have no go period. From 3k to 4k rpm it sputtered but was able to get up to tolerable speeds. It was all down hill from where I was at, so it wasn't to bad aside from the fact that I had to run the motor alot harder than i prefer to do. I could never put it into overdrive because the rpm's were just to low for the motor. A riding buddy I had gave me his Sea Foam, it's an additive, I am not sure if it helped me get down the road or not, but I did eventually make it back to town. When I hit stop lights I had to literally throttle to 4k rpm and feather the clutch to get it going down the road. My buddies said it seemed like bad gas, but everyone else fueled where I did, so unless there is something I don't understand about how fuel delivery systems work at fuel stations, I don't think that could be it. It was backfiring the whole way home, and just sounded like crap the whole way. I can't tell you how scary it was because as your going down the curves and the motor just wants to cut out, then it grabs mid turn, it made the bike wobble a lot in turns. Scary. So anyhow, any ideas as to what may have happened? I did remove the air cleaner thinking it was gunked up or whatever, but it was clean as a whistle. The bike is pretty much a stock cvo, 110, 6 speed, all that jazz. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Sure you didn't put diesel in it by mistake?  I've done it.  Just sayin'.......................   Later--HUBBARD

I don't think Diesel would combust in the engine since it is combusted by pressure, not by a spark plug. Would it even run on diesel? And actually no, I remember having to hit the 91 button like 3 times cause it wouldn't activate. I guess since I topped off, if that were the case, there would have been enough gas in the tank to make my first statement irrelevant, but 100% positive it wasn't diesel in the tank. (also there wasn't any black smoke, diesel fuel is very oily compared to gasoline)

It was fair weather riding, in the mid 80's in the high country of AZ yesterday where the breakdown occurred. I just noticed however that there are "floaties" in the tank... I had not noticed this yesterday. I think I should remove my tank and take a closer look as to what's in there. Anything I should know before I do this?

I had a similar issue on the 07 Ultra Classic that I owned at one time. Turned out that something had broken inside the fuel tank concerning the pickup tube or fuel pump. In my case it turned out that there was a recall to replace the exact part that failed!

Now that I think about it, I remember when I stopped that I had the tank lid off, and was looking in it, and when I turned the key on, i saw bubbles in the fuel, like air bubbles that is, I don't think it should be releasing air into the tank right? And unfortunately for me my CVO was just in for tires, and no mention of a recall.

Yes, pretty sure it was the '08s.  Fuel filter shell defect.

The attached pdf of the bulletin for the fuel shell recall isn't the greatest quality, but it's readable.  It's actually for 2008 models, but it wouldn't be the first time a recall didn't cover all the vehicles that had the same problem.

Everything that comes to mind resides inside your tank.  Fuel Filter, Fuel Regulator, Fuel Pump, Fuel Lines.  This is a picture of the innards of a 2004 fuel tank, a 2007 is virtually the same...

Just a thought to check fuel pressure,  may be getting a lean misfire due to low fuel pressure or not even enough volume.

I didn't see how many miles you have and when the last time your plugs and wires were replaced.

But don't try to overlook the basics.

You can check fuel pressure by tapping into the line that runs between the tank and fuel rail on the throttle body.  You just need to get your hands on spare fuel hose, then cut it and tee into it.  Here is a photo...
