Compensator failed on my 2010 FLHXSE
« on: June 26, 2014, 01:42:18 PM »

Last week my 2010 FLHXSE started being harder to start and getting a clunk when I shut it off.  Also was more noisy while riding.  I have the HD ESP so dropped it off at the dealer.  As soon as I described what was going on, the service tech said "sounds like the Compensator."  They ended up replacing the stock Compensator with the latest SE Compensator (42200064A).  Bike had 13,138 miles.  Feels and sounds much better.  See how long this one lasts.

I hope you got the service technicians name and shook his hand.  He's one of the few dealer technicians that both knows about compensator failures and admits to knowing about compensator failures...   :2vrolijk_21:

He is one of the good ones.  I try to deal with him anytime I go in. He even followed up by saying...  "we see a good many issues with them (compensators)"

I have had a few minor issues with the local dealer but overall they have been very good, especially on this 2010 with the extended warranty.  They get things handled quickly.

Wish my dealer would do something. Mine does the exact thing. Hard to start one time, then starts right up the next. I have the clunk when I shut it off as well. They just look at me like im dumb or something. I have asked them to check it three times. I have esp as well. My bike has 51,000 on it. :-X

You are not limited to your particular dealership for ESP repairs Jeff.  Go somewhere else.  And it doesn't have to be a dealership at all. since the ESP company also has many independent shops on their approved list.  Call the ESP folks and ask what shops in your general area are authorized to make repairs under your contract.

I just don't know why the dealers don't admit to knowing about these problems. We are the customers and have paid for a service to be done. The dealer get's paid to fix the problems. My stator bearings went out at 35,000 miles had to ride it that way till it got to 45,000 miles so it could be SOOO noisy that you could not here the radio before it could be covered. If and when the motor decides to go, I'm going to hold her wide and burn it down if I'm  on the freeway, That way they cant say there is nothing wrong with it. LMAO

Changed the compensator to the latest SE version last fall. Have about 5000 miles on it and you should hear the thing rattle. From idle all the way past 3000 rpm I get knocking and squealing type sound out of it, and when I shut off the bike I get major rattle.

Is it true there is a brand new version of the se comp? My builder was saying they revised them even more since last fall. Said there is a different part number on them now. Will have to change it up this coming winter. Hope it lasts.

P/N 42200064A is the most recent version as of this date.  The jury is still out as to how good this one will be, since they still didn't address the rapid wear of the sprocket to cam interface.  But at least the new one does have a for real needle bearing in place of that cheap POS thrust washer from the original design, and of course the added plastic tray to divert some lube to that area.  With H-D you have to be extremely patient when it comes to actually fixing their design screw-ups.  So far it's only been seven years on the compensator issue; it took eight years to fix the original Twin Cam cam chain tensioner problem, and about twenty nine years to fix the flexible Touring frame design (just to keep things in perspective).

Steve's Compensaver comes to mind. Not sure if it's cool to mention a vendors product in threads but we talk about all kinds of different products on the forum. Anyone tried this system yet? I was thinking that H-D used this design in their new compensator.

Nope.  Harley stole part of the idea, using that plastic diverter to send some oil to the thrust bearing, but they still haven't addressed the issue of effectively lubricating the cam to sprocket interface.  According to the claims the Compensaver also directs oil to that area.

Btw, we mention vendor's products all the time around here, so it's not a problem.  If you want details about the Compensaver you might want to contact Steve (GMR) directly, if no one else chimes in with their experiences with the product.
