I was torn between the RK and Deluxe as well, and my decision came down to $$$.

I bought a 6 month old Red/Gold flake 2014 Deluxe with 6,000 km for $33,000 ($29,447 US) from a non Harley dealership.

The rang all the dealerships in Australia and the best 'demo' price for a 2014 Deluxe I could get from all their stock was $39,990 ($35,772 US).

The Road King was out of my league with the best price for a demo 2013 RK Titanium for $46,990 ($41,976 US).

Don't worry the RK was on my hit list.  8)

Having said that I went for a demo on the green flake last week in Townsville. I wasn't that impressed with the bikes balance (top heavy) but put it down to a seat height issue.

There is a reason they call it Road King as has been pointed out.

Handling is better than a soft-tail and so is braking.

Another option would be to add taller handlebars to give you more leverage.

I put 12" bars on my Street Glide and it made a huge difference. I'm 5'-8" (30" inseam) and 145 lbs so I ain't go much azz. Plus, they are much more comfortable than the low stock Street Glide bars.

I did exactly as Jerry suggested.  Due to my spine complications I had to have a better suspension and even went with a 13 shock which increased the rear wheel travel from 1.9" to over 4" inches while only raising the seat 1/2" due to the shock angle.  A little practice and you can easily get use to using one foot quite comfortably.  I would exhaust all options before making a decision.

Good Luck

Another option a friend of mine did was to get his standard seat made a bit narrower - got about 1 inch taken off each side of the seat. Made a big difference.

The seat was on Jerry's list, but is probably the first thing to try.
